I was here today 11 MAY 2026 with my wife for a Roll Sandwich lunch. We are both yearly visitors to Melbourne and we are from Singapore and we stay in Clayton during our visits. However, today was the first time for the both of us trying this place, which has been in Clayton since 2002 and which appears to be a local food icon. We ordered the following here today: a Classic Clayton Steak Roll for ET, a Bacon Egg & Sausage Roll, and a Coke Zero. As regards the Rolls here, they were excellently assembled with yummy freshly cooked proteins sandwiched in a deLIGHTful crusty bread roll. Service here was good. The dining ambience here was superb in that there spacious and comfortable indoor dining, and there's outdoor dining albeit much smaller. And we could see why this place does so well with its constant stream of customers and apparently regulars at that.
This was the best steak sandwich / roll I've ever had. The steak was cooked to perfection and the roll was fresh with a thin crispy outer shell. These guys know what they're doing. Seriously good.
Popped in for lunch today. I was very excited, filled with anticipation as my first time here & had heard great things through social media etc. Service was friendly. I ordered a steak roll with the Italian sausage and salami and peppers etc and was cooked in no time, excellent service! Unfortunately, much to my dismay, I found my steak roll with all its fillings was quite underwhelming, not much flavour coming through from the steak or the Italian sausage. My steak was also overcooked, chewy and fatty making it hard to chew through, so it was quite disappointing. I wouldn’t get another one. Maybe I was just unlucky!
This place is simple, charmingly unpretentious, stubborn, and reliably delicious. They won't give you any special treatment because their sandwiches are already special enough. It's truck-stop meets Italian sandwich shop in the best possible way, established back in 2002, serving one thing and one thing only: proper Italian-style steak and pork sausage sandwiches.nnNo frills. No filters. No gimmicks. Just pure, unapologetic flavour.nnYou come for the steak roll, you stay for the steak roll, you leave having devoured the steak roll.nnAnd if you love prosciutto and chilli oil, you’re in the right place, these are absolutely must-haves!
What a fantastic sandwich! Delicious fillings and a really tender steak. Definitely worth a try.
