RIP Federal Backpackers I stayed here back in 2001 when backpacking around Australia and going up the east coast on the classic Greyhound route. With the advances in technology since 2001, I came onto Google to look back at some of the old haunts from my travels. I can’t believe this old building has gone! Don’t get me wrong, like most hostels it was hardly luxurious but has been a mainstay in Bundaberg for years. Thanks for the memories
I have been staying there for a month and I got a job right after I arrived. It was really nice for staying. The receptionists are friendly and care about people there. You can say it's better than other two of working hostel city center & tomato hostel where I was staying. Kitchen is alright a bit small and stressful if you are cooking with 50 people together. The dorm room which i was staying was nice.
Great hostel, the people are amazing. Staff really helpful and they're lovely to you if you show them respect. Hourly paid jobs are quite hard to get but Debbie will always do her best. It's not the cleanest hostel but most of that is due to the residents not the staff. Nice bar outside and laundry service inside. 24hr access which is nice.
In June 2013 Federal Backpackers was sold and is now under new management. When we took over the hostel was in need of renovations as the building was built in the late 1800's. We are in the process of renovations but are still open to business. We would like to thank you all for your patience while the renovations are occurring as this will take a little bit of time but by the end of the journey we will endeavor to have the hostel to a more pleasant standard but still keeping the charm of the old building. We have now also incorporated a fast speed internet cafe, tour information and booking service along with an Asian Supermarket.
Stayed here in 1995. Worked in tomatoes farm. Can’t believe it’s still here. Lots of backpackers looking for work and working. The hostel was not clean and not so good. 5 stars is only for the memories and that it’s still there. I recommend people go to other place for work, not bundaberg.
since being at the hostel. the only time I have been out of work is by choice. it really is the place to turn up and do your 88days. why? each day the staff talk to you about how your day was, they clearly communicate with you if you want off the job or stay on the job and if any new opportunities arise. They are genuinely out to help you finish your 88days. prfectly located in bundaberg.
I spend 5 months in this hostel. Tiny the receptionist is friendlyand but you need to follow the rules there. Unfortunately, no drinks allowed in the kitchen, will be help cause in bundaberg is no thing to do. They give you a job if you are right with them. The hostel is dirty, housekeepingand doing the minimum of cleaning. You will meet nice people and friendly, and the hostel is safe. No thiefs at all. So I can recommend this hostel if you are not afraid about cleaning. Thanks you federal as well
It is still existing. Wow! I stayed there 1994 at that time it was called The Federal Guesthouse for two weeks or so and had luck to get a job picking macadamia nuts which was very hard but also good paid. Other travelers never got a job, but got one promised every day. Seems that nothing changed : The guesthouse itself, as other people already told, was a lovely shithole. I remember that there was food stolen every day from the big fridge. But all in all i met very friendly other backpackers there. Will never forget it!
It's December 2014. I'm staying here, then 6 days off now. They don't much give me any job, I can only work once a week. Although when I request to work some farm, receptions say "The farmer doesn't need any Asian, only European can work." This hostel isn't comfortable for Asian, if you're Asian be considering. Actually European who doesn't have any good jobs either, thus I'll leave here soon.
If you go here order in bulk because once you're served that's it, shutters down and you have to wait well over an hour just for another drink unless u walk in the kitchen area and shout for someone to serve you, even then, expect to wait a lengthy time. Miserable attitude from some staff but I can't bring down the others who made it an ok place to hang out. I'd put it down to poor management from what I could see.
