A great place to relax, unwind and take in the great views and spectacular sunsets from our extensive decks. Enjoy a swim in our heated swimming pool.

Story

Dusky Lodge & Backpackers is situated on Beach road, Kaikoura. We are the largest hostel in Kaikoura catering for groups and budget travellers. We offer a clean homely environment with bunk rooms, doubles, twins, ensuite rooms and heating in all rooms. All bed linen and pillows are provided. There are 3 large kitchen’s fully equipped as well as BBQ’s on the decks free to use.
We have a large heated salt water pool and spa to enjoy while staying with us. Guest computers are available and the free wifi can be used throughout the building.
The hostel is only 5 minute walk to the town centre, and across the road from Whale Watchers. The best bakery in town is situated right beside us and grocery stores only minutes away.
The intercity bus can drop you off outside the hostel, ask the driver when you start your journey. We have plenty of parking space and it’s free to use. Luggage storage short term is available, if needed ask at reception.

Wow what a great place to stay at : seeing a hot tub online made me want to book it and after a long day or cycling and surfing the hot tub was such a treat.nn2 kitchens and communal areas- it was a really good spot to meet people solo travelling. Close to the main part of town, the beach, and a grocery store.nnSunsets on the balcony/ in the hot tub can't be beat. Really good spot.
I recently stayed with friends and the overall cleanliness of the rooms were very poor. Daily cleaning services should be offered.nn*I also forgot to add that I believe that are suspected bed bugs issues in your private rooms. For that reason, I don’t think privacy matters more than the health and safety of your guests.
The owner is super nice and had a lot of ideas for us. Nevertheless, the rooms are quite old and simple. The kitchens definately need a fresh-up.
Cozy vibes, nice porches, spa closes pretty early unfortunately. Staff were super friendly. I left my jacket in a room before I checked out and called a few times and no one would go to the room and check if it was there. Only the lost and found. Turns out it was where I left it after I checked out a win but a little stressful.nLots of local discounts and activity suggestions, would stay again!
The hostel itself is beautiful, the staff especially Carl are super nice. The highlight are the pools, which are in good condition. Unfortunately, the fridges are in a desolate state and run out in summer temperatures. Unfortunately, over 100$ worth of fish and meat spoiled, which ruined my Christmas.
