Story

Aladdin’s Cave

Glowing lanterns. Exotic fabrics. Ornaments. And a vivid ‘Arabian Nights’ mural. No we’re not talking about the movie set of Aladdin. We’re talking about the lively Middle Eastern restaurant, Dunyazad. Located just off the main drag in North Balwyn, this neighbourhood gem doesn’t give much away from the outside, but inside, it's like Aladdin’s cave. The menu is authentically Middle Eastern with intricately spiced and flavoured dishes like samkee harrah (fish of the day seasoned with garlic, coriander and walnuts, topped with tahina sauce and paprika) and vegetarian betijan (fried eggplant with yoghurt and mint sauce on a bed of saffron rice served with green beans). Come on Friday and Saturday nights for an even livelier dining experience, and watch in awe as the dazzling belly dancers put on a showstopping performance.

My 2nd time here - overall good Lebanese food and definitely worth trying, but the service from the staff wasn’t too sharp or attentive today.nnWe ordered the baba ghannouj and tabouleh for starters. Baba ghannouj was unreal but tabouleh had too much oil compared to what you’d expect. Bread serving was phenomenal.nnFor mains we got the Kebab Sultan and Kafta Meshwee. Both were good and would recommend. Portion sizes were pretty good. The menu doesn’t mention that they come with rice, but they do so rest assured.nnThe service wasn’t too attentive today, unfortunately. We had to ask a few times to get water for our table and we waited quite awhile before someone gave us menus. The food we ordered wasn’t unreasonable though.nnOverall, decent experience and good food. Likely to come back. Thank you very much.
Really lovely restaurant in the suburbs - beautiful decor and mural, and a fun surprise with belly-dancing entertainment at the end of the night! My favourite dish was actually the Tabouleh - so unbelievably fresh and delicious. The baba ganoush was high quality. Accompanying pita bread was soft, would have been extra nice if it was slightly warm too! The falafel was crispy on the outside and very soft on the inside. The dunyazad chicken was like a mild curry, with breast meat. Really enjoyed the house made orange blossom lemonade - would recommend anyone trying!
It is indeed a 5 star restaurant. The good is exceptional, the service was a little slow tonight but it was very busy.
My friends and I went for dinner at Dunyazad and it was brilliant from start to finish. We ordered the banquet and had a wide variety of dishes brought out to us. I didn't take enough photos as we ate it all too fast. The dips, finger foods, skewers of chicken and lamb and salads were all absolutely brilliant.nWe ate dessert with teaThe service was fantastic.nnBut the portion of the banquet was not enough.
Nice place, and food is good. Only Fri and Sat evening have belly dancing around 8:45 for 15min.
