Aladdin’s Cave

Glowing lanterns. Exotic fabrics. Ornaments. And a vivid ‘Arabian Nights’ mural. No we’re not talking about the movie set of Aladdin. We’re talking about the lively Middle Eastern restaurant, Dunyazad. Located just off the main drag in North Balwyn, this neighbourhood gem doesn’t give much away from the outside, but inside, it's like Aladdin’s cave. The menu is authentically Middle Eastern with intricately spiced and flavoured dishes like samkee harrah (fish of the day seasoned with garlic, coriander and walnuts, topped with tahina sauce and paprika) and vegetarian betijan (fried eggplant with yoghurt and mint sauce on a bed of saffron rice served with green beans). Come on Friday and Saturday nights for an even livelier dining experience, and watch in awe as the dazzling belly dancers put on a showstopping performance.

We had a lovely evening dining at Dunyazad Lebanese Restaurant. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with attentive service that made us feel welcome throughout the night. The menu offered a rich variety of traditional Lebanese dishes, and we decided to try a generous selection to share among the table.nnThe meal began with some excellent starters — the tabouleh was fresh and zesty, full of crisp herbs and a well-balanced lemony dressing. The baba ghannouj was creamy with a beautifully smoky flavor, and paired perfectly with the warm bread. The falafel was also very enjoyable, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a nice touch of spice.nnFor mains, we had the shish kabab, which was nicely grilled and seasoned, and the Sheherazad Shish Tawook, which turned out to be one of our favorite dishes of the night — tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. The Kabab Sultan was rich and satisfying, and the kibbee had a lovely texture and traditional taste that rounded out the meal well.nnTo drink, we ordered a jug of blossom lemonade, which was refreshing with a hint of floral sweetness, a perfect complement to the rich flavors of the meal. We also appreciated the reasonable corkage fee for bringing our own bottle, which added to the relaxed and accommodating atmosphere.nnOverall, the experience was memorable and the food authentic and full of flavor. While a couple of dishes could have been served warmer, it didn’t take away too much from what was otherwise a delightful night. We’d be happy to return and recommend Dunyazad to anyone looking for an elevated Lebanese dining experience in Melbourne.

I just had dinner, and the food was great. We had the sheik banquet, and the food was fresh, plentiful and tasty. Wait staff were extremely kind and accommodating. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a great night out.

I am not one to write reviews but I have to because I want to say thank you so much for such an amazing food experience. I am extremely particular with my food and the Lebanese food here has to be one of my favourites. I heard so many good things about this place and had to try it for myself. It was such a busy night being Mother’s Day tomorrow and the service was beyond exceptional, the waiters went above and beyond tonight. First l have to say WOOOW to the cheese pastry and the meat cigars, these were my favourite and honestly would love to get the recipe pleaseeeee because it tasted like heaven. I have been to multiple Lebanese restaurants especially in Sydney where Lebanese food is high quality. The food here was cooked with love and the service was even better. Everyone had a smile on the their face and was so welcoming, we even asked them to surprise us with a drink and God damn the cocktails were so yummy and delicious. Don’t even get me started on the mains, the meat was cooked to perfection, I honestly think this will be my go to restaurant with family dinners! Even better that I got a nice dance from the belly dancer which ended the night with so much laughter and fun so thank you dunyazad for bringing life to Melbourne with such incredible food and love. I will be back and if I could give 10stars I would but 5 will have to do!!

We preordered a few chef’s specials, and they were all fantastic! This is the first time my kids have eaten so well—we’re definitely coming back again.

We love the food, but also the sense that you are always welcome.  The wait staff are friendly and happy to offer suggestions.  We have been a number of times as it is a local favourite and the servings are generous.  The wines are also reasonably priced.  There is a belly dancer on a Friday and Saturday night.  While this is an attraction for some, others may feel uncomfortable.
