De Fontein Belgian Beer Café

Story

De Fontein is located in the heart of Mission Bay, just 8 minutes drive from Auckland’s CBD, and is the perfect place to escape the hustle & bustle of the city, especially from the sun drenched balcony overlooking the bay.

We proudly serve authentic Belgian cuisine complimented by an extensive selection of fine Belgian beers & some of the best wines from NZ & Australia. We recommend you try our signature steaming mussel pots, or our famous mussel platters (our full menu & drinks list can be viewed on the Food & Bar pages).

Pretty good. Decent menu and value especially if a daily special appeals. Food more cafe or pub like as opposed to fine dining so to say. Good range of European beers. Staff can be a little casual and hard to solicit table service. Outdoor balcony and views of the harbour in good weather.

I purchased a grab one deal and took my daughter for lunch yesterday. We sat outside upstairs. I asked for a white wine spritzer and my daughter an ice coffee. My drink was flat with no taste and hers was separated and watery when it arrived. We ordered 2 open chicken sandwiches. The chips were cold, over cooked and I’d say came out of the freezer. The 2 bits of bread were tasteless, the chicken over cooked and hard and the salad pretty much non existent. Previous to this we had a lovely meal last year so I’m not sure what has changed here. Maybe it was my mistake saying we had a grab one deal before ordering so they basically didn’t care what they gave us. Disappointed is an understatement.

An oasis after a very sunny & warm morning of exploring the craft fair across the street. We arrived around lunch time (just before the lunch rush) & were seated on the upper deck/patio with great views of the park & street. Fast friendly & attentive service. The food was excellent as were the drinks. I was too busy enjoying my time to take any photos. 🤓

Located in busy Mission Bay the Belgian bar is a nice spot for a drink and feed, especially if it is a nice day and you manage to grab a seat on the deck upstairs outside (worth making a booking to reserve). They have a great selection of Belgian/foreign beers to try as well as a good selection of wines and non alcoholic drinks. They are known for their mussels and sausages however for this meal l had the Salmon and Kumara stack, which l was very impressed with and was lovely and fresh. The only thing that let them down was the service, which was very slow. We had to ask for our table to be cleared and go up to the bar to ask someone to come and do a drinks order. As the food and drinks were great l would certainly be back.

I wanted so badly for the food to be good as the venue. The venue is magical, something out of a good novel or perhaps the hobbit and the day itself was bright and vibrant. The beer was fabulous as can be expected however, the delight stopped there. I ordered the rump steak medium rare. It was cooked more medium than medium rare. Next the mushroom sauce while exquisite was stone cold... the perfect combination for my equally cold fries. Now don't get me wrong the flavour was ok and the mushroom sauce really brought the steak to life however the end result was ultimately a chewy, cold saturated dribble that took well over 30 minutes to arrive at the table. Disappointing. Edit: would have complained about this yet sadly not a single waiter came to check on us once our food was delivered. And when we went to pay we mentioned our concerns to the man at the counter - not even a 'sorry or I'll pass that on' - the responses to these reviews seem to be positive yet some of us are experiencing the same issues which makes me wonder whether there is any intention at all to change? Fire the chef, train the staff and get good.
