Christchurch NZ's only gay bar, open 5 nights every week, till very late

Story

CRUZ CONTINUES TO GO FROM STRENGTH-TO-STRENGTH IN THEIR RELOCATED PREMISES AT 77 VICTORIA STREET

Finally, after the sort of endless delays that everybody in Christchurch has experienced for themselves during these “post-quake” years, Cruz has expanded into the larger 1st-floor space above, and there is now a proper nightclub again.

CRUZ is open Wednesday to Sunday each week from 8pm till 4:30am, with a VJ playing chart and dance favourites from the 70’s thru to the very latest releases, Thursday to Saturday. There’s a $5 cover-charge after 10pm at the weekend, which increases after midnight

18 months in the making, the new dance-club is open Friday and Saturday night upstairs and is decorated with a dazzling 80’s theme, combining classic disco lighting from 30 years ago with the very latest lighting effects from 2013. The sound system is everything that you have come to expect from Tony and Bruce over the years, too. Fitted out from scratch, this space is nothing short of stunning. We have a high standard of dress-code at weekends; please don’t be disappointed by making us turn you away. We value your custom, but after 3 years of working in the middle of the dirty dusty bomb-site that is the Christchurch CBD, we think it is now time for us all to dress-to-impress at weekends! There’s even the best little balcony space in the entire city, overlooking bustling Victoria Street, where we can show the world that gay people still know how to dress, and how to party with style

If you can’t find us on the corner of Peterborough & Victoria Streets (opposite the Casino) then just look for the rainbow flags that are always flying in the breeze. It’s a very prominent location, and as always we make no attempt to hide ourselves away, and nor should we!

THANKS TO YOU ALL FOR THE SUPPORT THAT WE HAVE RECEIVED THESE LAST 3 YEARS SINCE THE FIRST OF THE CANTERBURY EARTHQUAKES – AFTER MORE THAN 30 YEARS OPERATING GAY CLUBS IN CHRISTCHURCH, TONY AND BRUCE ARE STILL GOING STRONG AND CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THE MOST FAMILIAR AND SAFEST PLACE FOR THE CITY’S GAY COMMUNITY AND FOR VISITORS TO OUR DAMAGED CITY!

This place is the opposite of inclusive. We rocked up on a Friday night as a group of gay guys from Melbourne at 10:30pm to find the place empty. The door girl demanded a $5 cover charge and then threatened us that if we didn’t pay it now, we’d be required to pay a $15 cover charge later. We asked if we could just have a couple of drinks until it started to pick up and then we’d be happy to move on or pay the cover, only to be told no. Meanwhile, we promptly moved to the bar down the road where it was packed and spent all our money. Way to show visitors to your city the opposite of New Zealand hospitality.

Was horrific, didn't even go in, Friday night, the place was dead as in not even one customer, we had walked quite a way to get there so decided going to go in for a beer at least and they tried to charge us $10 cover on the door. Shove it up your ass 'cruz' you're empty for a reason no doubt

Terrible bar. They have a lot of attitude and don't deserve your business. Traveling around the South Island, I made a point of being in Christchurch on a Friday night so I could finally go out to a gay bar. Even though the bar accepts credit cards, this shady doorman said that I had to pay $10 cash to go in. When I asked if I could pay by credit card, he said no. I then asked if there was an ATM inside or nearby and he said no. He was rude, had a lot of attitude and couldn't care less if I decided to not come in at all if he couldn't get his pocket change cash. What this not-so-smart bar owner apparently doesn't understand is that I typically spend upwards of $100 on drinks when I go out. Business they'll now never see. They wanted to make sure they'd get their $10 in cash to walk into a completely empty bar at 11pm...it's no wonder it's empty. I decided not to go in, not just because if the ridiculous $10 cover, but because of the rude and unfriendly people at the door. Who wants that on vacation? I instead gave my business to the straight bars on Regents street which are all classy, beautiful spaces with friendly and professional staff. They'll go out of business soon unless less they 1) learn from what successful bars do and 2) fire the door staff.
