I read the reviews and still took the chance as it was only a short detour out of my day. Really disappointed.. FYI leaning back folding your arms while looking down your nose over your glasses is not engaging. A smug attitude is not needed. Also only offering a buyer one choice to look at when I give you my budget 2.5-3.5k screams of know-it-all attitude. Basically I had to ask for the guns by name for them to be handed over for me to look at. Same with optics. Can’t imagine how bad the advice would be if you were a first time buyer.. By the time I pay all the bills and look after the family needs you only get so much money and time for yourself. It’s a privilege I afford myself rarely. Plenty of places to spend my money and time. I choose to go elsewhere. I hope the next shop appreciates my custom.
TLDR - Disappointing experience. Staff can be rude and condescending, especially if you're not purchasing high-ticket items. They tried to pressure me into buying a more expensive scope despite my budget and failed to respond to multiple emails regarding my purchase. Furthermore, the firearm I bought appeared to be second-hand, despite being sold as new Two other reviews mention something similar Long Version: My first impression of Clayton Firearms was that it was a great looking store with a good range. Richard was very informative and offered a wealth of knowledge on hunting sambar deer and the gun I should be using. He was very helpful but after sorting out the paperwork for the rifle he took me straight to the scopes and tried to sell me a top end model. I told him my budget for a scope was $1000 and he told me I would be better off waiting a few weeks to get a more expensive one - fair enough, we decided to leave it until I got the rifle. I did some more research on scopes online and later that week I emailed them about ordering in a scope that I wanted. I didn’t hear back from them. Two weeks later I sent another email asking about the scope, and this time asked if they had anything in stock that was an equivalent in a brand they carried. Still no reply. Fast forward to the 28 day mark my permit clears and I get a call to come in and pick up the gun. I pay for the rifle and then it comes time to buy a scope. I’m immediately handed a $3000 scope to look through, I tell them I only have $1000 and he tells me not to be a cheapskate. He had an $800 scope in stock in the magnification I wanted and showed me a $1200 scope in a different mag spec which he could take a deposit and order in for me in the specs that I wanted but it would be a 2 week wait. I was pissed because I’d emailed twice about scopes and could have had everything sorted out for this one trip had they only replied to their emails. At this point I had an uneasy feeling but thought I might just be rushing to meet a long weekend hunting trip. I excused myself to take a phone call while he wrote up the lay-by for the scope and when I came in he had written up a $1595 scope instead of the $1200 one we first looked at. I told him I thought I was ordering a cheaper model and not to worry about the scope, and that I would come back and get one once money had cleared through PayPal for a guitar I had sold. I said I needed a sling and a gun bag and I’ll get those today. As soon as I said I wasn’t going to take the scope his attitude changed immediately and I was told that he would organise the scope first and then organise the bag and sling later. “One thing at a time” he said. I said I need to get ammo before I go and he was dismissive and told me I didn't need ammo if I didn't have a scope without knowing I was buying a different calibre for my brother who’d asked me to grab ammo when I told him I was going in to pick up my new gun. A few days later I called into another gun store to check their scopes and found the $1500 scope discounted by $300 - my money had cleared from Paypal so I was able to buy it. As they were putting on the scope and doing a bore sighting the sales assistant came out and asked me if the gun was new or second hand. I told him new and that I’d picked it up a few days earlier. He pulled me out the back, showed me marks where a rail or scope had previously been mounted, and informed me that one of the threads was buggered and wasn’t grabbing. He also showed me gun powder in the barrel and said that while some residue remains from test shots in the factory, there was more than normal and I should probably give the place a call about selling me a second hand firearm. When I did called to ask about it being a second hand gun I was told “we didn’t have any secondhand Browning X-Bolts for sale so It couldn’t be a used gun” and when pressed about the rail marking and damaged thread he passed it off as potentially being a display model. Very disappointing experience, I won’t be buying from them again.
I recently visited this gun store, hoping for professional service and advice. However, my experience was profoundly disappointing. The staff's attitude was atrocious, offering no useful help, and I was subjected to continuous mocking and belittlement throughout my shopping experience. What I expected during my shopping was a friendly, respectful, and professional environment, but this store completely failed to deliver. The rudeness and unprofessionalism of the staff made me extremely uncomfortable, and every minute spent there was unpleasant. For these reasons, I strongly advise other customers to avoid this store. There are many other gun shops that offer better service and a respectful attitude towards customers. I have also decided never to visit this store again and will convey the same advice to my friends and family.
Best firearm store left in the south east, got me Adler and Browning from Chris very helpful and the PTA turnaround was 2 days, coming shopping very soon, may need some more speed, I'm thinking of uping the powder on win mag short. Hoping for over 2700fps for a special project of mine and accuracy is very important, depending on a hearing I'll get the exact distance, anyway now I'm blabbing great gun store!
Purchased my first rifle here around 8 years ago and the team were super friendly, accommodating and walked me through the process as a first time firearm owner - made the whole process so much less intimidating. Have been back a few times for ammunition and all the workers are always so friendly.
Ordered a 22 rifle and scope for my son, called to say it was in, when I went to pick it up they advised me I also need rings to mount scope, I expressed my disappointment as I was not told this when I ordered. I can only assume the boss old man came out and said we don’t give things away I said I understand but I was not advised I needed this also can you do any discount in which he told me that I did not do my research properly. I left with my initial deposit and permit. Avoid as this shop owner is arrogant as.
Called in for a follow up on an order that I paid for, clerk said look you gotta wait and just hung up on me. Rather rude I’d say.
Walked in to ask about personal protection for my gf. Wasn’t sure what was allowed in Aus. Obviously wasn’t looking for a gun, but figured maybe there was something I didn’t know about, and thought I’d ask the experts. Was literally called stupid for asking. Was ridiculed by multiple staff. Serious little man syndrome in here. Toxic. Avoid unless you too use guns to make up for your tiny ….
Great shop and friendly staff. I had Richard help me on 2 separate occasions as I had no idea about what is good. He spent allot of time to give the the information I needed. I listened to him on both guns I purchased, and I'm glad I did! Not sure why there are bad reviews as I felt all the stuff are wanting to help and they have allot of stock on offer.
Good range of guns and ammo. Average price. Awful customer service. This is the second gun I've bought through this shop. Both times, it was the same experience. It's a shame because they have a great range of products
