Cinema Nova

About

An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton’s cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema.

Story

Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 as a collaboration between two landmark Australian independent cinemas – the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond and Westgarth, and opened as a twin theatre.

Since that time we’ve grown to become one of the biggest independent cinemas in the southern hemisphere, with 16 theatres showing the best in quality indie, Australian and arthouse film. An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton’s cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema.

Our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events programs allow our audience to experience film up close and personally, while also making going to the cinema an exciting event.

From our famous house-made choc tops, voted the best in Melbourne by The Age, to our Nova Bar + Kitchen, and our indulgent Nova Deluxe and High Tea in-cinema dining sessions, you can combine your love of cinema with the best in food and beverages.

Cinema Nova: where there is more on screen, more choice, more to enjoy.

Reviews
absolutely my new favourite cinema, a hidden gem, so comfy, gorgeous bathrooms, lovely hidden little easter eggs like the reviews! surprisingly loads of screens but they’re really intimate, or our screen 7 was anyway. can’t wait to go back on a monday when they do the deals, although it’s absolutely worth paying whatever amount just for the experience!
My go-to theater in Melbourne, and I recommend it to absolutely everyone I know. Their Discount Monday tickets are a blessing; $7 before 4 PM and $10 after. I genuinely think it is the cheapest price you can find for movie tickets in Melbourne, and I am eternally grateful to Cinema Nova for offering something like this, making cinema a lot more accessible for people.nnWhat makes Cinema Nova so special is how much heart they put into everything they do. Their setup is so thoughtful and unique. They post themed choc tops that match the movies currently playing such a fun and cute touch, they have review sheets and a board where you can write down your thoughts right after watching a movie, and their movie selection is carefully curated. Their lineup is always more extensive and interesting than what other cinemas offer.nnYou can just tell how much the owners genuinely care about movies and the community they are building. It's not just about making a profit here; it feels personal, and I appreciate it so much. Walking into Cinema Nova always feels like stepping into a space that was created by and for people who love films as much as I do.nnI hope this place stays around forever. I cannot imagine Melbourne without Cinema Nova and their choc tops. Thank you for being amazing!!!
If you walk for 20-30ish minutes from the CBD you will end up to this vintage-style cinema! Lots of theatres inside 15???, and some of them are very small too, just 22 seats the one I have been to.nRecommended!
Slightly traumatised by the silent bullying from the fellow spectators that sat next to me. I got hushed when whispering to my buddy and got death stared when munching on my chips and grimmed when I sipped through a straw.nnA pair of ladies also sat on my seat and was hopping from one after the other until all seats were taken. Poor form.nnThe local crowd ruined my cinema experience.nnOriginally enticed by the Monday discounted tickets but Won't be returning.
2024: Decent independent cinema with possibly the best lineup of films in the city.nThe screen size is a bit piddly, it's better to sit within the front 2-5 rows.
