Cinema Nova

About

An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton’s cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema.

Story

Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 as a collaboration between two landmark Australian independent cinemas – the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond and Westgarth, and opened as a twin theatre.

Since that time we’ve grown to become one of the biggest independent cinemas in the southern hemisphere, with 16 theatres showing the best in quality indie, Australian and arthouse film. An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton’s cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema.

Our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events programs allow our audience to experience film up close and personally, while also making going to the cinema an exciting event.

From our famous house-made choc tops, voted the best in Melbourne by The Age, to our Nova Bar + Kitchen, and our indulgent Nova Deluxe and High Tea in-cinema dining sessions, you can combine your love of cinema with the best in food and beverages.

Cinema Nova: where there is more on screen, more choice, more to enjoy.

The Nova Cinema in Carlton is an absolute gem, well worth the 200+ km journey I make to experience its exceptional ambiance and superb selection of films. Recently, I watched *The Teacher Who Promised The Sea* there, and it was a breathtakingly beautiful movie that left a lasting impression. The Nova's commitment to showcasing such evocative and thought-provoking films is unparalleled. The intimate atmosphere, friendly staff, and impeccable sound and picture quality make every visit a memorable one. This cinema is a haven for true film lovers, and I can't recommend it highly enough!
Slightly traumatised by the silent bullying from the fellow spectators that sat next to me. I got hushed when whispering to my buddy and got death stared when munching on my chips and grimmed when I sipped through a straw.nnA pair of ladies also sat on my seat and was hopping from one after the other until all seats were taken. Poor form.nnThe local crowd ruined my cinema experience.nnOriginally enticed by the Monday discounted tickets but Won't be returning.
2024: Decent independent cinema with possibly the best lineup of films in the city.nThe screen size is a bit piddly, it's better to sit within the front 2-5 rows.
Delivering one of the best cinema experiences. It feels old fashioned but in a nice way. They show a really diverse selection of movies and the customer service is a lot better than most places.nI thought the bar area was a little compact and under staffed but the staff I dealt with were nice people. They are making efforts to be more sustainable I think they could keep pushing at this and reduce more plastic waste in their candy bar offerings
Cinema Nova holds a special place in my heart as my favorite cinema in Melbourne. It seamlessly weaves together a tapestry of cinematic experiences, featuring everything from little-known gems to indie masterpieces and blockbuster releases.nnThe cafe is a true gem, adding an extra layer of delight to the overall experience. What sets it apart is the dynamic decor that changes with the release of new and popular movies. It's not just a place to grab a bite; it's a visual celebration that resonates with the excitement of the film world.nnCinema Nova exudes an old-style charm that's hard to find elsewhere. The carefully selected films transport you to different worlds, while the cinema's ambiance embraces you with a nostalgic warmth. It's a perfect blend of classic and contemporary, offering a diverse range of films without compromising on the charm that makes the cinema-going experience special.nnWhether you're a fan of intimate indie films or eagerly anticipating the latest blockbusters, Cinema Nova caters to every cinephile's taste. It's not just a cinema; it's a cinematic sanctuary that invites you to explore, enjoy, and appreciate the magic of storytelling in a setting that feels both timeless and contemporary. A cinematic haven in the heart of Melbourne!
