Cinema Nova

About

An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton’s cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema.

Story

Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 as a collaboration between two landmark Australian independent cinemas – the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond and Westgarth, and opened as a twin theatre.

Since that time we’ve grown to become one of the biggest independent cinemas in the southern hemisphere, with 16 theatres showing the best in quality indie, Australian and arthouse film. An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton’s cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema.

Our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events programs allow our audience to experience film up close and personally, while also making going to the cinema an exciting event.

From our famous house-made choc tops, voted the best in Melbourne by The Age, to our Nova Bar + Kitchen, and our indulgent Nova Deluxe and High Tea in-cinema dining sessions, you can combine your love of cinema with the best in food and beverages.

Cinema Nova: where there is more on screen, more choice, more to enjoy.

This old-school cinema is a hidden treasure for movie lovers. It's spacious, cozy, and full of charm — perfect for those who enjoy a relaxed, nostalgic movie experience. The tickets are very affordable, making it a great option for a casual night out.nnWhile the food selection isn’t very wide, what they do offer is delicious. You can grab a tasty sandwich, some fresh popcorn, and choose from a great variety of drinks to enjoy during the film.nnIf you’re looking for a welcoming place to watch movies without the crowds and high prices, this cinema is the place to go.
Easily one of the best cinemas I’ve ever been to with really good prices for tickets and has the best ice cream and snacks. With lots of good variety of films whether it’s both old or new or even independent. I always do have a great time whenever I come here as there’s a good line of great restaurants and cafes. Staff is always nice, but parking is nightmare and extremely expensive so you’re better off getting public transport. 10 out of 10 one of the cinemas Melbourne has to offer for any avid moviegoers.
Great independent cinema with a wide range of films you don’t always see in the big chains. The atmosphere is unique and cozy, and the café/bar adds a nice touch. Some areas could use a little update, but overall a very good movie experience.
We are regulars at Cinema Nova Lygon Street and love watching the movies on offer. We also absolutely love the service at the Cinema Nova bar. Matt always has a smile for us. He makes sure we are happy with our food and drinks orders. He is always courteous, polite and professional towards us and I notice that he has good rapport with all the customers he serves. Even if we are not going to watch a movie we will go to the bar for an excellent coffee made by Matt and staff.
Lovely, artsy theatre with a great selection of films. You can pick up some snacks, wine, or even a really cool character-shaped ice cream and then enjoy your film in a comfortable seat. I plan on coming here more often especially since they offer a student discount
