Cinema Nova

About

An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton’s cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema.

Story

Cinema Nova was established in August 1992 as a collaboration between two landmark Australian independent cinemas – the Longford Cinema in South Yarra and the Valhalla Cinema in Richmond and Westgarth, and opened as a twin theatre.

Since that time we’ve grown to become one of the biggest independent cinemas in the southern hemisphere, with 16 theatres showing the best in quality indie, Australian and arthouse film. An essential part of the Lygon Street scene, Cinema Nova is a part of Carlton’s cultural fabric and offers Melbourne more than any other cinema.

Our Meet the Filmmaker and curated events programs allow our audience to experience film up close and personally, while also making going to the cinema an exciting event.

From our famous house-made choc tops, voted the best in Melbourne by The Age, to our Nova Bar + Kitchen, and our indulgent Nova Deluxe and High Tea in-cinema dining sessions, you can combine your love of cinema with the best in food and beverages.

Cinema Nova: where there is more on screen, more choice, more to enjoy.

The selection of films is amazing. I wish I could give an additional star based on the customer service - however I can’t. Really lacking is basic courtesy and any type of interest in their jobs with the public. If they improved their attitudes this cinema and it’s fantastic selection of films would be a hit!

I've been there twice now... And let's just say there's some things that could be improved. They seem to book rooms for private hire, and they're definitely not used to get that amount of traffic at the same time. Getting off the escalators was almost impossible, as the entire foyer was packed. I'm pretty sure that was already dangerous enough to consider doing something, but it was just the start. The queue to the candy store was impossible, with a couple of staff taking the orders. Then, a desk had been placed at a very inconvenient place, forcing the people registering for the event to get in the way of the escalators' end. Last but not least, the hired room was one of the first ones, so you had all these people cramming up the already quite tight corridors... They need to rethink service not just profit.

Cheap movie tickets with comfy seats and great screen setup. Would strongly recommend it! Good location too.

Cinema Nova is an awesome old school place to see quality films. You can get cheap tickets every Monday ($7.00 and $10.00 after 4:00 pm). FYI, do not expect to find a Marvel movie or a Hollywood blockbuster here.

You can't see the screen in some of the smaller cinemas if someone sits in front of you. I've still come back and seen other films though and the vibe is awesome and the price is reasonable. Would chose this most of the time over the larger cinemas.
