I love this school so much, my children have had such a nurturing and creative learning experience here, supported by teachers who are really working for a higher purpose. Both my son and daughter have flourished in their own unique way and they have the confidence to be themselves. ‘Know thy self’… the rest comes easily! Also, for those who wonder how kids go transitioning to mainstream school, each child is different, but my daughter skipped a year and was achieving As and Academic Awards in mainstream high school. I still want the high school to go through to Year 12 … such a better atmosphere.
My eldest child attended CHSS for two years, at first we absolutely adored the land and resources. we had planned to stay for our children’s entire schooling journey and had high hopes. We immersed ourselves into the school community over that time but it is extremely cliquey and full of gossip which the staff are involved in as well. I had meetings with the school expressing my concerns as I could see my happy healthy child’s development regress and mental health decline, I was told it was my child’s “Karma” to be in this class and that they are too busy focusing on other children, mine wasn’t a concern. The Prep/Roseapple classroom was full of bullying, violence, extreme swearing and lack of belonging. The children were often obviously disengaged, my child came home constantly expressing boredom and unhappiness. It continued to escalate over the year with it getting so out of hand among the class parents that there was multiple incidents and abuse, unfortunately CHSS needs to improve on conflict resolution within their community. Lots gets brushed under the rug or avoided completely. Most days were chaos and disruption, it was obvious staff were really struggling. We waited and worked with them over the year hoping it would improve but staff were yelling loudly at the children, It didn’t feel warm, safe or healthy… The rhythm felt very strict and authoritarian, in general the staff behaviour was a massive red flag and there was no accountability. We expected much more but it felt very similar to what you would expect in public mainstream education with a giant price tag. We found the school and community to be quite unwelcoming to LGBTQ+ and First Nations families we didn’t feel accepted or safe to share our culture there without the echo of community resistance. It is so severe that children of colour cannot access darker skin tones during art and dark coloured clothing/yarn/felt is frowned upon. Making it virtually impossible for Indigenous children to feel connected to their country and community. CHSS does not have clear policies or boundaries that protect their LGBTQ+ students, in my experience it was not a progressive or safe space. I really wish I saved my whole family this negative experience, my child is now thriving at home.
If I could give a zero start I would. Please parents stay away from this cult school. This school will damage your child. If your child is bright they will crush their soul and yours every day. The majority or the women teachers and admin are women who are divorced or lonely and they are like angry. I know lots of cases where parents have to pull out their children due neglect, abuse or bullying. One te teacher was under investigation for harming a child emotionally and physically. If your child is bullied they will let your child suffer. Their philosophy is the child has to endure that as is their karma or “contract” as the teacher told me. The child will have zero opportunity to learn all the amazing things in this world but playing style “Lord of the flies” movie. They change Principals like underwear as no body will endure that crazy school. Everything is dirty and they use the mums who cannot pay the fees to clean the toilets, I saw mums miserable and crying so many times. The amount of gossip and bad vibe of the mothers there is outrageous. They all prentd to be this hippie holistic tribe but everyone is gossiping and stabbing you in the back. Stay away from this school parents. I can’t count the amount of people who have horrible stories in this school. If you want your child be very behind in school and being traumatised and learn that Gnomes and fairies exist. Then go for it! Horrible School and the teachers and admin even worst. Hypocrites! Always with their fake smile.
This place is paradise. Nestled in the jungle, dozens of kid-friendly climbing trees. The teachers that I met were really friendly and switched on, and what I saw of the learning program seemed excellent.
The Cairns Hinterland Steiner School is truly an unsung gem of a school. The teaching and admin staff are exceptionally dedicated to the well-being, as well as academic success, of each student. My child is a happy, caring, confident, young person, which is in a large part due to the respect for the individual shown to the students and the mentoring/role modelling at school. The unique rainforest setting, large comfortable classrooms and other facilities are easy to see but just the cherry on top of the real treasure, the staff!
This school expands my children’s imagination, creativity and their curiosity to learn. They have an intrinsic empathy for the natural world. They will be well placed to tackle the big challenges the world will present for them as adults as well as understanding their place within it. The teachers are phenomenal, the grounds are beautiful, I wish that I could have experienced such a schooling growing up.
A beautiful and nurturing environment for children. It's so nice to have them in a place where the teachers treat them like family. My kids are flourishing.
The school is situated in a beautiful environment. The curriculum and school camps are specific for the year level and an amazing experience for the children. I would recommend the school.
Cairns Hinterland Steiner School is a unique treasure, incomparable to any other school in Far North Qld. CHSS is a gift to our children, providing a conscious educational experience from rich and diverse resources that extend above and beyond 'schooling'. Children are nurtured toward the fulfilment of their ultimate individual potential -- a lost art in the current paradigm of educational institutions. My child has certainly blossomed thanks to CHSS, as she continues her journey of human unfoldment.
Such a unique and professional school and community. My children love attending and now with a daughter in state school high school, I can see how well she is doing and the integrity of her formative years that was developed within this alternative school. They focus on the 'whole child' and I am really grateful to have access to this kind of education in our region.
