Cafe O-Mai

About

Cafe O-mai (pronuced Cafe Oh my) is a little quirky and intimate Vietnamese cafe situated in the suburb of Annerley near Chardon's corner.

Story

Our menu reflects our Vietnamese heritage with some western influence in our breakfast menu. Its not fusion, so don't get it confused! Our slices, cakes, muffins and biscuits are baked on the premises. Our fresh baguettes are hand made from the talented baker Minh at Patisseries Bakery & De Francs in Sunnybank Hills.
Our philosophy is to not over complicate our fresh produce. We strive on preserving natural flavours and do not add any msg to our dishes. We hand make everything from the lemongrass pork sausages to our spring rolls in store. We do not discriminate on diet restrictions so if you are gluten/dairy intolerant we can cater for your needs.

We don't judge on your budget, our menu fits in with everyone hip pocket. Its our goal to educate the burbs of Brisbane a new way of eating! Yes you can have a bowl of Pho (pronuced "Fur") at 7am. In the streets of Vietnam there are numerous vendors selling Banh mi (baguettes) and steaming hot soups for breakfast. So get your pho on and head to Cafe O-Mai for something different and special.

Recovery breakfast after a night out which did not disappoint.nnWe sharedn Pork meatballs with quail egg in tomato sauce and fresh, warm baguettenandn Aunty Five's Claypot - lemongrass pork sausage, baked eggs, mushroom, tomato and sour dough.nnThe menu is creative and modern with authentic traditional dishes offered and the portion sizes are good.nThe tomato sauce was rich but light and full of flavour and the crusty bread was the perfect dipper! The pork meatballs were a little underwhelming in flavour but that may be subjective since my palate preference is for intense, spicy flavours.nThe Claypot was delicious! The lemongrass pork sausage had a really great balance of flavour and texture. Highly recommended but again, our taste buds look for more punch and we both found the broth at the base a little sweet for our liking and will ask for fresh chilies next time.nnVietnamese coffee was superb! Long black was worth ordering another nnThe fitout is artistic, modern with a relaxed atmosphere. The staff are exceptional! We found them very helpful and friendly - we were able to reserve a table which is becoming rare these days in a cafe! So 10/10 for the service.nnWe must have missed the busy trade although it was by no means quiet - service was prompt and efficient.nWe also had no trouble getting a park close by.nnGreat first time experience!
The food was pretty good initially but became boring afterwards. This may be because of my taste, but the pho tasted too ‘sweet.’ The Vietnamese coffee however was amazing! There was no trace of corn that is often mixed in Vietnamese coffees so I was really happy. Also, the phin for the coffee made me nostalgic and homesick
Absolutely enjoyed a breakfast change and was not disappointed. Celebrated our daughter's birthday with a variety of different dishes, all with wonderful flavours and great portions. While it was noisey when we attended, it only reflected the popularity of this place. Greatly appreciated the wonderful service throughout bour time there. Highly recommend a taste of Asia for that different breakfast option. Thanks Cafe O-Mai.
Food was good and the portion of meat for each dish was very generous. Their charcoal-grilled options were well seasoned, very flavourful and smoky. I enjoyed the grilled chicken noodle salad which had a good assortment of greens.nnThe BBH was alright, it tasted quite watered down and the soup was not spicy hot at all, very mild flavour. The juice was alright, nothing too special. The Vietnamese coffee was alright too.nnOverall this place is pretty nice and worth the visit.
Overall, this was a disappointing visit.nnThe waiting time was excessive...both to be seated and for the food to arrive. When the dishes were served, the waiter did not confirm whose order was whose and simply placed the food on the table, which felt inattentive. We also requested table water, but no one followed up on this.nnThe food itself did not meet expectations. The beef brisket bánh mì lacked flavour; the pâté was barely noticeable, the brisket was soggy, and there was an overwhelming amount of butter on the bread. The pho noodles tasted very heavy on MSG, leaving us extremely thirsty afterwards, and overall the flavour was below average.nnThe grilled chicken vermicelli salad was also underwhelming. The pickled carrot and radish did not taste balanced, and the iceberg lettuce was poorly prepared, with very large, uneven pieces that affected the texture of the dish.nnGiven the long waits, lack of service attentiveness, and inconsistent food quality, the experience did not justify the visit. There is room for improvement in both service and food execution.
