Right in the heart of Brunswick St, Bar Open has hosted roots, rock n roll and general brouhaha since 1998. Bar Open is notorious for its honest atmosphere and has a reputation for supporting experimental, live and local music. The band room is pumping 6 nights a week and drinks are served until late every night. Bar Open is a bastion of the old Fitzroy.

Help I can't see anything, it's a Saturday night and I came here hoping to have fun and see things. Unfortunately only one of these came to be as I can see nothing. Someone should definitely turn off this smoke machine, and turn down that damned music! My body is moving involuntarily making it very difficult to get myself out of this foggy hellscape. 5 star experience, would return.
Was a nice venue, but my experience is tainted by the 5 or 6 absolutely massive cockroaches roaming the seating area near the stairs. Drinks were expensive $16.40 for a pint of Cooper's. Wouldn't be much of an issue if it weren't for the huge critters hanging around the joint. Absolutely disgusting.Service: 3/5
Great band and good beer selection but spoiled for us by the surly attitude of the bartender. I get the customer is not always right, but we felt treated very poorly. One drink and we were gone…Service: 1/5

Went to go to a gig, was a fun experience. As it's an old building has a bit of a musty smell upstairs and you can feel the floor warping a little if people are jumping around to the music being played so a little scary in that regard. First drink I bought came in a small cup and second was a bigger cup when I ordered rum and coke, two different bartenders for my drinks so that was probably why but I'd prefer both drinks to be the same in volume especially for 13 bucks for one drink. Parking: No proper parking just hope you can find a spot along the streets nearby Wheelchair accessibility: Could probably get into lower bar fine with wheelchair but only stairs to get up to where live gigs with tickets
Hey, i didn't eat there, ok? Ssssh... Don't say anything. The service is good, the selction of booze is overwhelming not in a bad way, just get a tequila or two then decide for a non drinker. So, if you want to be cool and hang with the locals or meet up with your Melbourne friends, this is a great place to absorb the local energy.
Two of us came to Bar Open in Fitzroy to enjoy the live music. Upstairs has a small stage for the bands to perform and has a very homely feel to it. The bartender who served us was quite apathetic, but we came for the music and not the drinks, so it didn't affect us. The live music was thoroughly enjoyable, and I would be keen to come here again!
Love visiting here, atmosphere always real casual, outdoor area, upstairs band area like a grungy mates house with old couches everywhere comfy. Good variety of music....sat or Sun Arvo if lucky u may catch cool jazz or similar at front Bar......
Every Tuesday night, Make it up Club event is an absolutely appointment to attend. Impro Avantgarde music
If Make it up club on a Tuesday is anything to go by, then this place is warmer than the open fire they welcome you with!Service: 5/5
