Update June 2026:nnThis has to be my most favourite cafe of all in Melbourne and given all the places I've been to and all the meals I've had that's a big statement. I simply love the ambiance, the food is absolutely incredible and the staff are very good. Try a meal here and you'll understand how honest and true the above statements are and check-out the stunning drinks and dishes in my photos...nnOrg Review:nnOne of the best experiences in Melbourne... Love the soy chai latte and the food is great. Usually a bit of wait to get a table which I never do but I would make an exception here. If you can try to get a table in the back courtyard which is amazingly serene. Check out the pics!
On a slow, sun drenched Sunday afternoon, we pointed the Landcrusier toward North Melbourne expecting a decent boozie lunch. What we found instead was a full blown institution.nnAuction Rooms was packed. Not “busy for a Sunday” packed. Every table occupied, staff weaving through the crowd like seasoned Formula One drivers, coffee flowing in industrial quantities, and a queue of hopeful diners waiting patiently for their shot. That’s usually a sign you’re either walking into a tourist trap or somewhere genuinely worth your time. Thankfully, this is very much the latter.nnHoused inside the bones of an old 1864 auction house, the place wears its history well. High ceilings, exposed brick, sunlight spilling through large windows and a courtyard buzzing with conversation. It’s Melbourne café culture operating at full throttle.nnThe food arrived fast considering the chaos surrounding us.nnThe Buttermilk Chicken Burger was exactly what you want from a burger on a lazy Sunday. Juicy fried chicken, crunchy ranch slaw, pickled beetroot cutting through the richness, all wrapped in a soft brioche bun. The sweet potato fries disappeared almost embarrassingly quickly.nnThe Creamy Mushroom Paccheri was comfort food disguised as sophistication. Rich shiitake stock, mushrooms layered with earthy depth, a perfectly poached egg spilling golden yolk into the cream sauce, all lifted by truffle oil and crunchy fried enoki mushrooms.nnFor seafood lovers, the Pan-Fried Barramundi delivered. Crispy skin, delicate flesh, creamy cauliflower purée and a thoughtful collection of potatoes, beans, wild rice and artichoke that turned a fish dish into something far more substantial.nnThe Royale Beef Burger with a can of Moon Dog lager was another standout. Bacon, cheese, pickles, special sauce and perfectly cooked beef. No gimmicks. Just a proper burger done right.nnThen came the Rhubarb French Toast a towering monument to excess. Poached pear, bourbon whipped cream, mascarpone, strawberries, pistachios, maple syrup and maple glazed bacon. Big, unapologetic and completely satisfying.nnEven the simpler French toast ordered for the adult kids at the table earned enthusiastic approval.nnWhat impressed me most wasn’t the food. It was the staff. On a day when lesser venues would have folded under the pressure, this crew never missed a beat. Friendly, efficient, engaging and genuinely welcoming despite serving what felt like half of Melbourne.nnAuction Rooms has earned its reputation the hard way ….by delivering consistently good food, exceptional coffee and genuine hospitality. We’ll be back. And judging by the crowd, so will everyone else .
The much spoken about Auction Rooms has lived up to its worthy reputation. What a comfortable, warm and nostalgic place to visit.nThe service was excellent and the food…. Wow!nSt Ali coffee can’t go wrong and occasionally you hear recordings of an old fashioned Auction playing.nLove the vibe and the respectful way they maintain the venue’s history.nIf I lived nearby this would be my number 1 choice for brunch.nWell done guys. SpectacularnThank younJ&D
What a delicious brunch we had in the auction rooms!nnThe chicken salad I had was excellent, I’d highly recommend it. Coffee was very tasty too, albeit it a smaller size for a medium.nnStaff were very good. $70 all in!
I asked for a BLT or a egg and back on toast, the lady the served me said we don’t have, but I can make you something similar, two pieces of toast, eggs, back and some tomatoes.nI said ok sounds great!nIt was delicious, and the coffees was amazing, but it also came with a unexpected price tag of $43.66nnOr double the price I’d normally pay for a BLT or a bacon and egg role else where, hence my 3 start review, all in all it was a good value for money and a positive experience with a amazing atomosphere.
