Attica

Story

Attica is a fine-dining restaurant in Melbourne, Australia, owned and operated by Ben Shewry. It has won several awards in Australia, and has been included in The World's 50 Best Restaurants since 2010. Its current position on the list places it as the top restaurant in Australia. The restaurant was opened by Dr David Maccora (an emergency doctor at Malvern's Cabrini Hospital) and his wife Helen, in a converted suburban bank building. After two chefs failed to attract sufficient patronage at the restaurant the Maccoras employed Ben Shewry (formerly at St Kilda's Circa) in 2005, giving him full creative control of the menu. In January 2015 the Maccoras sold the restaurant to Shewry.

Food was great - possibly too many courses to really enjoy everything since I was stuffed at the end!nnGreat service if a little impersonal compared to other fine dining.nnAtmosphere 4 stars because it's quite a big venue for fine dining and can get loud.nnWe LOVED the mushroom diversion outside. It's so nice to have a little break from the table during all these courses sometimes.
Brought my family here for a meal and it was 10/10.nnThe use of local Australian ingredients was nicely imagined. All the dishes had the right flavor and punch.nnThe service here was the highlight. The staff and servers were very welcoming, and when they saw that one of my daughters did not like the dish they came and offered to change up some of the ingredients and served the dish again.nnThe theater of the dining was also nicely incorporated into the three hour meal.nnAt the end of the meal, the chocolate cart was a favorite among my daughters.nnCongrats to chef Ben and the team for a job well done
Recommended by a chef friend from Singapore, I had high expectations — and Attica more than delivered! The opening snacks were exceptional, setting the tone for a meal which is full of surprises — including some adventurous native proteins I'll keep it a secret!.nnA highlight was the visit to their kitchen garden, where we enjoyed fresh Tasmanian mushrooms — such a thoughtful and unique touch with apple juice too :nnThe entire evening lasted around three hours, but it never felt long — each course brought something new and engaging. The service was excellent, and the atmosphere felt both relaxed and refined.nnIf you're in Melbourne, Attica is absolutely worth a stop. You'll leave full, inspired, and with a deeper appreciation for Australian ingredients.nnHuge thanks to the team!
Finally went to Attica the other night and honestly it felt more like being invited into someones personal food journey than just going out for dinner. It's venue is kind of lowkey from the outside but it definitely lives up to the hype you've heard.nnThe vibe when you walk in is really calm and understated. The space is simple but warm, nothing flashy, and it kind of sets the tone for the whole night. The staff were awesome, super friendly, not at all stuffy or formal and just really passionate about the food and what they're serving.nnThe menu is pretty adventurous and very Australian. They use a lot of native ingredients like saltbush and pepper berry and the way they build the courses tells a bit of a story as you go. One of my favourites was the Marron, and the bread it came with was absolutely divine, it might sound weird but it had a crispy outside and an almost mochi like inside. The desserts were great as well, creative without being over the top.nnIf I had to nitpick, the pacing between some of the courses was a bit off, some came out very close to others and others a little longer. There were also one or two dishes where the concept kind of overshadowed the actual flavour. Nothing major just small things you notice when its a long multi-course dinner.nnOverall, though it was a really special experience, It's the kind of place where you feel like you're connecting with more than just food. It's about culture, land, and the people behind it all. Definitely not an everyday spot but if you're looking for something thoughtful and different it's absolutely worth it!
Attica is totally unbelievable. So much is going on it's hard to put in words. Numerous staff members who are all incredibly attentive and right there when you need them.nThe food as you would expect is perfect, the flavours are out of this world. Picking a favourite dish would be next to impossible for me, but the warm apple cider style drink that was served with the magic mushroom was something special.nThe whole evening was a sensational experience. If you have a chance then this is definitely the place to go.
