We went to this bakery to buy their award winning Sumatra style beef pie and the mince and gravy pie. Both of them taste great. The orange cake and the chocolate Danish is also very good. We will definitely come back.
I would not recommend driving 24 km just to try their pie unless you are in Rangiora for another reason. The food cabinet was reasonably stocked for a Saturday mid-morning, and the café had a pleasant atmosphere, with a few people in the queue at the counter.nnI ordered the $9.40 Sumatra beef pie, which won the 2024 NZ Supreme Pie Award. Unfortunately, the pastry top was too thick, and dense, reminds me of a Coupland pie but with a slightly flaky layer on top. I did enjoy the spicy filling, which was made with real spices instead of curry powder. However, it might not be suitable for those with milder palate. It took four bites before I could even taste the filling; by then the pie shell had started to fall apart.nnI would rank the Sumatra beef pie third. The chicken asparagus cashew pie from Copenhagen Bakery is my top choice, followed by a steak pie from Fairlie Bakehouse ranking second. If you enjoy pies and have some cooking skills, plus a group of people willing to try your experiments, you might want to try making your own pies I recommend Anna Olson's pie dough recipe.nnThe almond croissant here is better than those at Copenhagen Bakery, the one from Copenhagen tasted more like thick bread. The Rangiora Bakery version is had the softer texture. The almond paste filling is a bit sweet and runny. The pain au chocolate was comparable to those at Copenhagen Bakery—nothing particularly special about them.nnI also bought four mixed frozen pies for $15 to heat up in the air fryer at home. The peppery steak pie could easily be mistaken for a spicy mince pie if I hadn’t known that bakeries typically don’t make peppery mince pies. A good steak pie should have chunky pieces of steak, if the meat is cut too small; it ends up resembling a mince pie after being slow cooked.
We wanted to try their award winning pie - it was good but abit too sweet for my liking. I enjoyed their steak and cheese more , better stick to classic pie flavours. Good ratio of cheese and meat fillings!nnCream donut was good! nnCustard slice was a let down.. probably the worst one ive had. It wasnt creamy and custard was very rubbery. Maybe it was an old unsold slice and we just got unlucky?
Fantastic spot, beautiful food and friendly people. So glad we discovered this through their winning the Supreme Pie award 2024. The pie was delicious and a lovely reminder of the 5 years I lived in south east Asia. We will be back. Recommend the Sumatra pie.
Great place with good food but was disappointed when I ordered my favorite which is Salmon and eggs. The portion of Salmon was so small!nI would have rather paid a little more for a decent size of Salmon as was very very small.
