This hostel is easily one of the best hostels that I ever stayed at, if not the best ever. Very artistic, queer friendly, lovely people, good vibes, good music and atmosphere. Very clean and very friendly staff. Sofas to chill throughout the hostel, instruments to play, board games to play, art to draw and anything one can dream of. Also the owners are trying to keep the hostel as environmental friendly as possible which is amazing. Few things which I didn’t like: - The wifi is not good and no lockers in the rooms. - There is kind of no reception This hostel is for the dreamers and the believers out there
Probably the best hostel I ever stayed in! I stayed there for 3 weeks and it really felt like home. Very familiar and cozy. Ben and Katie are very friendly and I never experienced such an atmosphere in a hostel. Had the best time and if I‘ll be around the next time I will definetly go there again:Rooms: 5/5
My favorite hostel! I’ve stayed here 4 times and loved it every time. On my most recent trip, our ferry was delayed 9 hours and we didn’t get to town until nearly 11 pm, but the host Ben had left us instructions and our room was ready for us. He’s a fantastic and laid back host who will give you tips for the area and just have a great chat. The place has a large kitchen with all the amenities you need to cook a meal plus free tea and coffee. Lovely lounge area with heaps of pillows, couches, blankets, books, board games, and art. I love visiting Kaikoura, and The Albatross is one of the reasons I’ll keep coming back!
Had a lovely lovely time here, my fave NZ hostel so far! Not party vibe, just a lovely chilled social vibe. Both nights guests played card games and asked everyone around if they wanted to join in. Lovely homely common area, kitchen and bathrooms clean, comfy bed. Definitely stay here as a backpacker in kaikoura!Rooms: 5/5
Update 2 the only bad review I ever wrote on google: Zero customer service, does not anwser to your phone calls. Blames everything on you, you are stupid ... just with kinder words. And yes: I am angry. The hostel seems to be closed. We booked a room in advanced and well ... arrived at closed doors. Calling the number at the windows led to nothing nor writing emails. Thats unfortunate but booking another room in Kaikoura is easy in winter. The problem: 3 days later I see in my bank account that they booked money from my creditcard. So dont go there ... Update: Hostel seems to be open, but the owner thinks you can not open the reception door, that was definitly locked. I asked his kind neighbours, who tried to call them aswell. And the funny thing is, I stayed at the hostel years ago. It took him 5 days to answer an email.
I had a terrible experience at the Albatros inn backpacker in Kaikoura. Despite booking a 4-female-only dorm with private facilities, I was given a completely different room in the main building with shared facilities. The bunk bed in the assigned room didn't have any safety railing, which made me uncomfortable due to personal reasons. When I tried to address the issue, the staff ignored my calls and text until a volunteer offered me a bed in an 8-person dorm. The next morning, I spoke to Katie, who seemed understanding and accepting of the solution. However, shortly after, Ben approached me and insisted that I leave the hostel, putting it as if it were my choice. His intimidating behavior made me feel unwelcome and unsafe. In a rush to check out, I gathered my belongings and as I was leaving, Ben blocked my way and forced me out. Feeling powerless and upset, I voiced my frustration, but he threatened to call the police if I didn't leave immediately. I complied and left the hostel. To make matters worse, they charged my credit card for both nights instead of just one. Despite reaching out to them through emails, they failed to respond or address the situation properly. Their lack of professionalism and disregard for customer service is appalling. I wanted to share my story to warn fellow travelers about this hostel. While Kaikoura could be a lovely place to visit, my experience at the Albatros inn backpacker tainted my stay and drained my energy. New Zealand is an amazing country with welcoming people, but this hostel shouldn't ruin your experience. I strongly advise against staying there.
Very homey vibe, art/murals on the walls, everyone super nice. The rooms were a bit packed and no lockers but felt totally safe. the bedsheets are super fun too.Rooms: 4/5
My favorite hostel so far. It’s so comfortable, homey, and has an incredible atmosphere. Coffee is made every morning, there is a piano and other instruments, a free painting area, and has a very open and social atmosphere. My most peaceful and cozy stay on my trip. The owners are very kind and helpful, and seem to be tirelessly working to make the place consistently clean and comfortable.
We loved it here. I'm usually the kind of traveler that only sleeps in the hostels but here it was so cozy and homey that I actually took a whole day and stayed in the hostel. You really feel how much the owners care about it. They have dinner on Thursdays where they have a barbeque with vegetarian options and lost of salads which we tried. The idea is that you donate some money if you can and want. They were really chill about the donation, they just want everyone to have a nice time really no pressure, just be there and have a nice time. They also have a lazy Sunday were they have a late check out and pancakes. The rooms are clean and cheap as well. Loved it and totally recommend it!
By far the best hostel i ever had in my life. The owners are awesome, the staff is super friendly and it feels like being in a big community. You have a lot of activities you can do like painting, playing guitar, piano, drums, borrow the bikes, play tennis and way more. On Tuesday you can join a free bbq and on Sunday you get a pancake breakfast. I already miss that place.
