AAMI Park

Story

Melbourne Park is a sports venue in the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Since 1988, Australian's bicentenary, Melbourne Park has been home of the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament, which is played annually in January. The park has facilities capable of hosting basketball, netball, music concerts and other events. In the past Melbourne Park has hosted ice skating, cycling, international swimming and motorsport events.Melbourne Park is owned by Melbourne & Olympic Parks, which also runs the adjacent Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. The Yarra Park section of the Sports and Entertainment Precinct is run separately.HistoryMelbourne Park was built in 1988 beside the Jolimont Yard as a new precinct to host the Australian Open. The previous venue, Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, had become too small for the burgeoning tournament. Melbourne Park's construction was completed in 1988 at a cost of at least $94 million. The unveiling of the new precinct was met with incredibly positive reviews by players and spectators, with some labelling the facilities and amenities the best of the four Grand Slams. Expansion of the precinct next occurred in 1996, when a further $23 million was invested to create two fully seated and larger show courts and eight new ‘Ace’ courts, as well as a large grassy space, now known as ‘Garden Square’.

Purpose built rectangular stadium for football (soccer) and rugby. The number of vendors at the stadium and the location of the venue are both perfect! Parking can be compromised IF you choose to drive in rather than public transport; especially if there are events at any one of the 3 other major sporting venues in this precinct. Accessibility to the players post game is also amazing from every corner of the pitch.

Great sports venue but a Fantastic place for concerts. Easy to get to, good security, great seating. Most recent gig was Paul McCartney. Brilliant. I swear half of Melbourne heard the fireworks during 'Live And Let Die'.

Saw Paul McCartney here. Was a fantastic show. Seats were a bit rough tho. We were sitting on the ground to the right of stage. Position was good but they supplied those plastic outdoor picnic chairs which were a bit uncomfy. The show made up for it tho. And the venue is pretty good over all.

Toilets and food pricing much better than at the AFL! Really accessible, comparatively intimate and good rugby. Very close to Richmond station.

Venue was excellent for soccer! However, security did not allow my 13 year old to carry soft drinks cans saying that it considered as weapon ! It can use to harm people. We had to keep it in customer service counter and get in. Once we entered we saw cans drinks available for purchase and we saw many spectators buying and taking with them to their seats !!! My kid was very upset for it and it took long time to recover. This happened on 24 March 2018 Melbourne city vs western Sydney match.
