Cool site. If you've been to Yellowstone and seen the geothermal parts of the park and liked it, come here! Photos don't do the park justice, so I've attached some terrible videos to give some insight into what you can see here. Parts of the park have a hydrogen sulfide smell but that's expected around geothermal springs. Really unique area, just be sure to stay on the path! You don't want to join the Maori warriors who were buried here.
Champagne pool is beautiful and it's got heaps of warm steam. Lovely walkways, but it's too hot on a sunny day in summer with only few shelters and shades. There's a souvenir shop and a Cafe with vending machines at the entrance. Fast entry on Monday, plenty of carpark outside, and not crowded inside.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
A wonderful world of varied Geothermal activity of various kinds in one single enclosure. From steaming vents, mud pools, green and yellow lakes it's all here. This also has the multi coloured Champagne Pool and the famous Lady Knox Geyser. Be aware, the Lady Knox Geyser erupts once a day only and they induce it to happen at 10:15am. So be sure to get to the park early to be in time to purchase the tickets and drive up to the parking spot to be able to view the eruption. You have to deal with the suphurous smell. But that is also true of rest of Rotorua as well
Must visit! It's a very unique landscape and the walks around the park are worth the time and present different geothermal pools and views. There are three different walks with increasing duration, but all are easy enough.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
If you are into geo thermal springs and gasses coming out of the ground this is the place for you. I would not say this place is "Beautiful" but it definitely gives an alien world vibe. You can walk 100 meters and the entire scenery changes around you. We though there would be a strong sulfur smell to the entire place but it was only in certain locations and somewhat mild. As a bonus we got to see Shaggy and Velma in the Mystery machine!
I think this is a must see if you are into geothermal activity. The colours and steaming lakes and also the mud pool are awesome. We skipped the geyser in the morning and rather enjoyed the nearly empty site.
Came to Waiotapu as part of a tour which included the Hobbiton set. There were 3 different tracks of increasing difficulty. It was very achievable to walk and explore all 3 within the recommend 90mins whilst stopping to take photos. Some parts of the track displayed on the map were actually closed which confused me momentarily. The Sulfur smell is also very strong throughout the tracks.
Terrific place to visit and walk around. The guide who led the geyser experience was excellent and gave an informative talk about the history of the geyser and nature park.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedYes
We like this thermal geopark because of its colorful and steamy views. You can walk on your one and read the information. It took us about 90 minutes. Spend the afternoon on the other side op the road in the hot pools camping plus pools for 62 nzd
The ticket is a bit expensive but it’s awesome to experience the sulphur lakes and geysers. There’s a lot to see and you won’t find anything else like it in NZ
