This area has been visited by people from all over the world for well over a century. Visitors first came to see the eighth wonder of the Natural World, The Pink and White Terraces. They were guided there by the local Maori tribe of Tuhourangi.
On the 10th June 1886 that all changed due to the massive eruption of Mount Tarawera. Slowly but surely the land here has healed from that destruction however the Pink and White Terraces are no more.
There are now many other amazing sites for visitors to experience and thankfully the guiding legacy of Tuhourangi is been re-born again, here at their Turangawaewae (standing ground) in the form of their descendant Karen Walmsley and her husband David Walmsley.
