What a hidden gem! The food was top tier, we ordered the crab sushi, duck and eggplant. Stunning presentation. The crab was melt in your mouth, fresh tasting and excellent protion size for a shared starter. The mains were great, the eggplant was on another level! You can tell the chefs really know what they are doing. The atmosphere and staff were also great. 10/10 will eat here again.
The last few times we have been there the service has been wanting, but last night it was very bad. They accepted our booking for 6.30 and it was after 7.30 before we got our entree, then another 1/2 hour to get next entree, only 2 small groups left and then we waited another 20 mins for mains. Very disappointed. We were offered a tea or a dessert, but we did not take them up on that. I get too that they take people from Japan but they do not know how to wait tables or even understand plain requests. Very stressful. We love their food but oh my, it might be a while before we go back.
Tomi was a very decent find. We were on holiday in Christchurch and decided to try this place and it did not disappoint.nnPlenty of parking out back which is always pleasant, the ambiance inside is actually very Japan like, feels authentic.nnThe food itself is damn amazing, everything we got tasted excellent, salmon Nigiri was special, I’ve never seen it prepared like this with such a long tail.nnAnd topping it off, service is excellent, always with a smile and the staff were very helpful. Can’t go wrong if you want some tasty Japanese food.
Two of us went for an early meal, only one other patron was there. We only got one if our two entrees, the second after we enquired was brought after our platter. Rice arrived halfway through platter. Sake not very warm, asked for reheat and they forgot to return it. The one of our two scallop entrees that did show up consisted of four slices of a scallop for $12. The waitress tried to clear it away and hadn't even finished the small amount of scallop on the plate. We spent $180 plus, very disappointing service. Ruined our experience totally.
First of all, let me tell you that I have lived in Japan for 3.5 years and I’m a big washoku fan. It was my first time going to this restaurant and I liked how clean it was including the toilets. The staff were very attentive and friendly too. We ordered takoyaki cause I miss Osaka so much!, pork and beef sukiyaki and while takoyaki and pork were nice, broth of sukiyaki was too sweet! I mean much sweeter than authentic Japanese sukiyaki. I wonder if it was a mistake or kiwis prefer not a kiwi myself sweeter broth, hence change in sugar amount. But I hope the chef takes into consider that broth was almost too sweet to be for sukiyaki. Overall, we had a really good time.
