Overall, it was a nice meal. The sashimi was good, but a couple of pieces weren’t as fresh as the others. The prawn tempura from the entrée was great, especially compared to the very average grouper tempura.nThe price has increased quite a bit compared to before, but it makes sense.nThey still offer BYO wine, which we considered, but didn’t end up doing.
A Masterclass in Precision: A Night at KinjinnThere are meals that satisfy, and then there are meals that linger in the mind like a well-composed symphony. My birthday celebration at Kinji in Christchurch was undeniably the latter - a rare, definitive 5-star experience that reaffirms why this establishment remains a cornerstone of the city's culinary scene.nFrom the moment the first plate arrived, it was clear that Chef Kinji Kuriyama continues to treat Japanese cuisine with both profound reverence and a playful, modern edge.nnThe Culinary JourneynThe meal was a parade of technical brilliance, beginning with the Sashimi Moriawase. The presentation was a vibrant garden of the sea; the tuna was buttery and deep in color, the salmon exceptionally fresh, and the inclusion of succulent prawns and delicate scallops elevated the platter from a standard appetizer to a centerpiece of craft.nThe Beef Tataki followed, showcasing impeccable knife work. Each slice was seared to a perfect edge while remaining tender and rare at the heart, brightened by a citrusy ponzu and the addictive crunch of fried garlic chips and lotus root. It was a study in textural contrast.nnOther highlights included:n• The Tempura: Light-as-air batter surrounding prawns that were sweet and snap-fresh, served with a delicate matcha salt that cut through the richness.n• Miso-Glazed Cod: A standout dish where the fish flaked at the mere suggestion of a chopstick, its caramelized exterior offering a deep, umami-rich sweetness.n• The Sizzling Teppan: A robust, savory contrast to the delicate raw courses, topped with a fine mountain of spring onions and bonito flakes that danced in the heat.nnA Sweet ConclusionnThe evening culminated in a thoughtful birthday gesture - a beautifully plated Matcha Tiramisu with a singular, flickering candle. The dessert was the perfect coda: earthy, creamy, and not overly sweet, embodying the balance that defined the entire meal.nnThe VerdictnKinji doesn’t just serve food; they curate an experience. Between the warmth of the service and the consistent excellence of the kitchen, it was the perfect setting to mark another year. For those in Christchurch seeking a meal where every bite feels intentional, Kinji remains the gold standard.
Had a belated birthday celebration by having the 8-course omakase here.nnWe were fortunate that Chef Kinji was back for the month of May and got to enjoy his well-balanced dishes using fresh ingredients.nnThe first dish with fried salmon was the star for me - crispy on the outside, tender and juicy meat inside.nThere was such a variety of sashimis various types of fish and other cooked proteins beef, lamb, prawns and unagi.nnFor the price of $100, this omakase is well worth its price with the range and heartiness of the food you get. We also ordered desserts green tea tiramisu and crème brûlée to end our dinner on a sweet note.nnService was great and the atmosphere cosy. The restaurant was packed throughout the night with at least half the customers being Japanese so you know it’s authentic and everyone seems to know someone from another table, creating a friendly and homely vibe.nnIt was such a memorable experience and the only bad thing was that they fed us tooo much - I haven’t eaten so much in ages!nnThis is one of the best meals I’ve had in Christchurch. Highly recommend their omakase go with an empty stomach and have it while Chef Kinji is still in town!
