The Front Room Cafe

About

Just over the sand dunes from Waikanae beach, you'll find our a friendly, relaxed, beach side cafe.
Open from 8.30am till late, Monday to Sunday.

Story

Owner & Chef Craig McBrearty provides the culinary experience, having worked with top chef Peter Gordon in London, and at restaurants in Europe and the United States.
Co-owner & Manager Hilary Bowen is passionate about providing great service to complement the food that is based on fresh local produce.
The Front Room offers what Craig describes as “modern/contemporary” cuisine, with a brunch menu from 8.30am-3pm and lunch from 11.30am-3pm. Between 3pm and dinner, you can relax with a wine or beer and enjoy an antipasto platter. Dinner is from 5.30pm till late.

The menu reflects the Front Room’s location: Waikanae Beach. One of the dinner specialties, the Waikanae crab, is caught by local fishermen only a stone’s throw away.

The Front Room is fully licensed and offers a BYO wine option on Sundays and Mondays.

Lovely food, lovely staff. Waffles could have done with slightly more berry and syrup topping. Lots of options on the menu that appealed so we'll definitely be back!
Have been several times..Management not great, food never matches the menu, expensive breakfast for what I got, no take away options which is a shame as by beach, only scones and small cabinet food range. Excellent service most of the time. Better cabinet food with old ownership, miss those amazing scones filled with spinach and cream cheese. Management should never give excuses and rebuttal from complaints should just listen, apologize rectify and ensure customer happy and will return.
Good coffee and local food. Have eaten here a few times and the food and location is excellent. The staff are very helpful and forward thinking. As in previous visits the latte and cheese scone was great Kid-friendliness: Great outside areas and playground across the road Parking: Lots of free car asking close by
We waited 2 hours from When we ordered to get our food, When we did get our food it came out sporadically, only half of us got food, the rest of us had to wait another 15min. One of them was a child who was ravenous by this point. The children's waffles was supposed to have two waffles only got one, the leak and potatoe soup had lumps of flourey potatoes. The big breakfast cold and had more potatoes then anything else. We had asked a couple of times where our food was and got told it wouldn't be long, that was an understatement. We were offered no explanation until we become a little frustrated to say the least. We were told there was lack of stocks in kitchen due to ordering issues, a staff member had walked out and new chefs who got tickets mixed up. Please note though, the wait staff were awesome. We dine out frequently and this has to be the worst experience we have ever had to the point we will not return. For all the poor service and below average food we still had to pay full price, very very disappointed
Lovely restaurant, can eat inside or out. Great food, excellent service. We were there Labour weekend, so was very busy but the staff were great and so onto it! Highly recommend.
The lunch meals were a big disappointment: odd caesar salad ingredients, haloumi and asparagus on toast were measly small helpings, thin tiny bits of cheese and bits of raw chopped asparagus, yuk flavour. Horrid meal in nice garden.
Very dissatisfying lunch, poached egg on toast, I would think, would be quick and easy. But after waiting 45 minutes, the egg yolks were hard, the whites were like rubber, and the toast wasn't cooked. It's a shame I have to give them 1 star, because they don't deserve it.
I visited The Front Room on a trip up north to visit family. We decided to go for dinner and we’re not disappointed by the lovely service, the menu and the atmosphere. The food was delightful and would highly recommend a visit from anyone looking for a great meal with great service.
Just bought two takeaway coffees. $16 Is that the norm now or rather over priced ??? Coffee was a little underwhelming and weak. Just as well they use dark horse coffee as that saved the day Service was reasonable considering they were busy.
Rung Wednesday to book in for dinner for Friday night the 14th October heard nothing back rung left another message Friday morning to check on our booking status no return call. Finally someone answered the phone around midday only to be told they are not doing dinner service. How hard would it have been to leave a message on your answering machine saying that. Disappointing to say the least.
