The hostel was clean, the kitchen is well equipped, the service is friendly and the interior was refreshingly nice. Our twin room even had a sink. Even though a shelf missed, we really enjoyed our stay.
Don't make the mistake of staying in this terrible place. I was so scared and shocked when the owner shouted at me and refused to accept me, being racist and drunk. He said he didn't like my voice or my foreign accent. I also heard guests complaining about a bad smell in the rooms.nnWhen I arrived, the owner was not at the front desk and did not answer the phone. When I finally managed to contact him, he sounded very annoyed and rude and asked me if I was “Indian” by the way, I’m not, but that doesn’t matter. I'm an Eastern European traveler on a two week trip to New Zealand, I have a degree in linguistics and I've never had a problem with my voice, accent or my country of origin. Guests who overheard this conversation advised me to call the police because the owner refused to accommodate me due to his racist views. The owner was rude to other guests as well.nnIt was such a terrible and frightening experience. I got scared by the owner and was forced to leave the hotel late in the evening. There was no other accommodation available in Greymouth and I was lucky enough to find accommodation 30 minutes away where the owners awaited my safe arrival and made sure I had a bed to sleep in.nnI wish places like this didn't exist in New Zealand and men who could throw a woman out on the street at 11pm didn't run hotels in such a beautiful country.nnP.S. I never received a refund for that night.
owner and staff are extremely helpful and friendly. kitchen is huge and everything you need is in walking distance. some bathrooms have recently been renovated. price is great. definitely recommend this place!
Spotless family-owned hostel. Shops, visitor center and train station are within walking distance. The owner is friendly. He gave us a tour of the property upon check-in. The rooms colorful and cheerful and the kitchen has everything you need to prepare a meal. Would book again.
Great room and an even better host! We left on our bikes the next day and left a watch and water bottle in the room so Glen, the owner, drove around town looking for us to give the items back! So kind and very thoughtful! Highly recommend this great hostel. Thanks Glen!
