The Citadel Cafe

For a small Cafe in a not-so-great area of Whanganui, the prices are too high. Yes, the food is good, service fine and the atmosphere above average. Dropping the overall prices of the food by 15 - 20% will make it a much more attractive place.

Stopped for a coffee at the Citadel. Wow! The iced coffee was the best I have ever had. Caring service and dog friendly. Had a lemon slice from the cabinet and was delicate texture and beautiful flavours.

Our lunch was a highlight of our visit to Castlecliff Beach. We enjoyed the Fish Tacos pictured and Citadel Smash avocado and eggs. Highly recommended!

We returned as we came here a few years ago and loved it. I am assuming there is new ownership as this experience was a lot different.nThis time was average, very overpriced for basic menu and not the same vibe as last time. We chose whay looked most affordable. My fish burger had too much tumeric, not enough sauce although when ordering a fish burger I dont expect the tartare sauce to be green, it did not taste like a tartar and this was not described in menu. My husbands chicken burger was very bland and flavourless even with jalepeno, not enough sauce. Drinks were pricey too. 8.50 for an apple juice. Would not come back this time and glad we didnt bring the kids. We spent $73 for 2 burgers, 2 drinks, a side of small expensive dry chips because burgers dont include fries you have to add them.nDisappointed in the change.

So sad to say that this is the 3rd time I’ve had a big disappointment from Citadel. It’s not what it used to be. Staff member was blunt to the point of being rude. The portion sizes have obviously been cut down That’s Amore was pretty underwhelming yesterday on the cook quality and portion sizes. The vibe there is gradually disappearing. Sad to say because it used to be a favourite local haunt.
