Story

The Te Waikoropupu Springs are located in Golden Bay, on New Zealand's South Island. The springs are known for the clarity of the water, and the volume of water discharged. The springs are spiritually significant to the Māori people.Water clarityThe horizontal visibility of the constantly 11.7 °C cool water in the springs has been measured at an average of 63 metres, and until 2011 was considered second only to sub-glacial water in the Antarctic. Since that year, however, the record holder for fresh water clarity is the Blue Lake (Tasman) still in New Zealand.Volume of waterThe springs are notable for the volume of water discharged from the eight main vents. It is estimated that 14,000 litres of water are produced per second, approximately enough to fill 40 bathtubs. In a 1974 television documentary, it was noted that this would be enough water to supply a city the size of Boston, Massachusetts. The floor of the lake is covered with white sand. Waters expelled from some of the smaller vents carry the sand upward. These vents are known as the 'dancing sands', which for the few scuba divers who have secured permission to dive in the springs, is one of the highlights of underwater sightseeing.Spiritual significanceThe Springs have been registered as Wahi Tapu with the Māori Heritage Council of Heritage New Zealand. Waikoropupu is the legendary home of the female taniwha, Huriawa, one of the three main taniwha of Aotearoa. She is a diver of land and sea, travelling deep beneath the earth to clear blocked waterways. She is brave and wise and believed to still rest in the waters of Waikoropupu, when she is not away attending to business.

A great walk in native bush and once you get to the springs it is really amazing. The springs a crystal clear and a very nice blue. The walk doesn't take very long and is relatively flat with mainly a proper path. I really enjoyed my time at Te Waikorupupu Springs and would recommend visiting them if you are in the Nelson / Tasman region
This place is absolutely stunning and well worth a visit. I remember coming out the pathway into the open area of the springs and was taken aback by the beauty. Crystal clear water, I could see the coral and fish swimming beneath
A short walk to an unexpected experience. We've never seen a spring push out so much water and the water is indeed famously clear. Pleasant stroll through woods to see other springs.
Easy walk around a very beautiful natural spring. Could easily do this one with all the family. The track is very well made with broad bridges in places. The water is tapu and must not be touched.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Fantastic natural springs site only few minutes drive from Takaka, perfect for family day out or just a casual stroll. The site is very well maintained by DoC and it takes about half an hour return walk on a well marked path. Path is easy accessible for prams and even saw a person on a wheelchair. Good and spacious car park with toilets and some spaces for picnic / lunch. About half way through the walk you finally reach the lake / springs and it’s absolutely breathtaking, with crystal clear water. Frequent observation platforms are nice addition. Great place to enjoy local nature and wildlife. Absolutely recommended for everyone!
More than a decade after I first saw this place, I'm still awed by it on my second visit. I'm glad that places such as this are protected. It deserves to be, for it serves to remind us of what we have lost by being careless. While we were there, we witnessed just such a thoughtless act. A man was trying his hardest to touch the water, even though there are signs that prohibit such stupid actions. What would he have gained? Photos or videos don't do justice to this place. And it's hard to describe water so clear it's almost transparent. As a result sunlight reaches the bottom of the spring, bringing out the vivid colors of the plants, sand and rocks. The best way to fully appreciate this place is to see it with your own eyes and be mesmerized by nature at its purest.
Absolutely stunning and definitely worth the drive. Nature really showing how amazing things can be. The sheer beauty took my breath away. I wasn't expecting the spring to be gushing with such pressure while being so spotlessly clean. It's free to visit but forbidden to make contact with the water or take any.
Lovely tranquil place with a shirt 1 km walk to the spring feed lake through a mini rain forest with lots of birdlife. Toilets and lots of information. Well worth the short deviation to see. Free to enter/parkVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
We were stunned by the top-notch purity of the spring water. The flat walk to the spring is suitable for both children and the elderly.Visited onWeekday
