Story

The Te Waikoropupu Springs are located in Golden Bay, on New Zealand's South Island. The springs are known for the clarity of the water, and the volume of water discharged. The springs are spiritually significant to the Māori people.Water clarityThe horizontal visibility of the constantly 11.7 °C cool water in the springs has been measured at an average of 63 metres, and until 2011 was considered second only to sub-glacial water in the Antarctic. Since that year, however, the record holder for fresh water clarity is the Blue Lake (Tasman) still in New Zealand.Volume of waterThe springs are notable for the volume of water discharged from the eight main vents. It is estimated that 14,000 litres of water are produced per second, approximately enough to fill 40 bathtubs. In a 1974 television documentary, it was noted that this would be enough water to supply a city the size of Boston, Massachusetts. The floor of the lake is covered with white sand. Waters expelled from some of the smaller vents carry the sand upward. These vents are known as the 'dancing sands', which for the few scuba divers who have secured permission to dive in the springs, is one of the highlights of underwater sightseeing.Spiritual significanceThe Springs have been registered as Wahi Tapu with the Māori Heritage Council of Heritage New Zealand. Waikoropupu is the legendary home of the female taniwha, Huriawa, one of the three main taniwha of Aotearoa. She is a diver of land and sea, travelling deep beneath the earth to clear blocked waterways. She is brave and wise and believed to still rest in the waters of Waikoropupu, when she is not away attending to business.

We had kind of a cloudy day today, but even so you can tell how beautiful these pools must be on a sunny day! The water is super clear and the colour in some places is stunning.
Beautiful!!!! Although you cannot swim, don't ignore signs unlike me‍ lucky I know what tapu means so knew not to swim. Pretty cool as you can see the water bubling up from under the springs.
Beautiful place, visited 2 days in a row, on day rainy and the other sunny. Both times was very special and beautiful. Easy walk and stunning views of the springs. DOC have done a fantastic job creating a beautiful place to visit.
Awesome little walk. Takes around half an hour with kids used to walk really flattish for the full loop. The pond with the springs is just beautiful. There are a few panels explaining a bit of the history, ecosystem and Māori beliefs at the beginning.
Gorgeous blue water spring. Walk is pretty easy even with little kids. Wheelchair accessible tracks. It's pretty amazing how much water pump to surface from earth. Must watch if you traveling to Golden Bay area.
A beautiful walk among the natural spring. Very short. Much information is presented on the boards at the beginning of the trail. A good place for meditation.
Impressive springs with a cultural significance, well worth the stop. A very easy stroll that the whole family can enjoy.
