Harwood Hole

Story

Harwoods Hole is a cave system located in the northwest of the South Island of New Zealand. It is one of several important cave systems in Takaka Hill, between Golden Bay and Tasman Bay. Starting at the surface as a 50-metre round entrance and descending 183 metres, Harwood Hole is New Zealand's deepest vertical shaft. Further in it connects with Starlight Cave. The long rope descent is considered one of the most spectacular parts of the caving experience at Harwood's. Harwood's Hole has an overall depth of 357 m.Henry Harwood (1844–1927), with John Horton and Thomas Manson, opened up the Canaan Downs area and discovered Harwoods Hole, though it was not immediately entered. It remained untouched until cavers winched down in 1958. Upon completion of exploration in 1959, Harwoods Hole became the deepest explored cave in New Zealand, a record that stood for many years.

Harwoods Hole in Tasman is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to New Zealand. This stunning natural wonder is located in the Abel Tasman National Park and is easily accessible by foot or bike. The hole is world-renowned for its incredible depth, reaching over 357 meters! Visiting Harwoods Hole was an unforgettable experience. We were blown away by the sheer size of the hole - it’s hard to describe just how immense it is until you see it in person. We hiked to the hole on the Harwoods Track, which was a beautiful walk in its own right. The track winds through the park and offers stunning views of the lush green landscape. Once we arrived at Harwoods Hole, we were greeted by the sight of the giant sinkhole. It’s truly awe-inspiring, and we spent a long time just gazing down into the abyss. We could hear the sound of water far below, and it really felt like we were truly experiencing the raw power of nature. Overall, I would highly recommend a visit to Harwoods Hole to anyone traveling to New Zealand. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you won’t regret. Just be sure to bring comfortable shoes and plenty of water!
We'll worth the walk. Don't miss the summit track.
A great short walk to the hole with beautiful forest and rock formations. The hole is incredible but a little frightening with no barriers or viewing platform. There is a short 10 minute detour to a lookout with stunning views that is well worth doing, but again has no barrier or viewing platform.
Was a very airy feeling and strong vibes in this place. I'm glad we didn't camp here. Did the walk and was impressed but not, really had to be careful where you walk that's for sure
Incredible place to walk feels more like an adventure!!! climbing threw and over rocks lots to see we took 4 of our kids aged 10 to 5 years old the walk was nice for them but wouldn't say it's safe once you get to the hole was totally beautiful though
Wonderful walk in the shade and cool below the beech tree canopy. Go to the lookout at the fork right the view is spectacular. We're older and wore boots but younger adults were even doing this walk in flipflops. The 11 km dirt road drive to the starting point was slow, sub 20 kmh to keep rocks from damaging my small rental car. There was tap water in the car park and TP in the pit toilet.
good hole. Very big deep hole- deepest in southern hemisphere. Do not bring children- a few steps off the path brings you to very inviting, deep and dangerous cave holes that children could climb into. Otherwise lovely! requires a level of agility towards the end of the walk.
Nice walk to the pothole. Last 400m with lots of rocks to climb over. Take enough time to get there and back. It is a massive hole!
This was a great short walk. Lots of campers there too. There were toilets and fresh water there too. Recommend a visit
You can not see the opening of harwoods hole as its surrounded my cliffs unless you were to absail to bottom harwoods hole is 176 mts deep theres no safety barriers on lookout so be careful don't get to close to edge to get a view .Nice 30 min hike through the forest to harwoods hole not a steep climp just last part climping on boulders to get to view point .You can also car camp for $6 a nite in doc camp at carpark
