Portobello Village Tourist Park

My partner and I stayed at the Portobello Village Park for 2 nights just after the Easter weekend. We loved the location, probably one of the best on our month’s trip. The park was very quiet, the proprietor greeted me and was very accommodating with giving me a great powered site for our van. We liked the location so much we stayed for a second night. The showers were fine, facilities kept very clean and tidy. It’s not as modern as some of the Top10 parks but its charm and location make up for that. This village and location was indeed my favourite on the whole of the South Island and we did most of it. You truly get off the beaten track.

We’ve traveled all over New Zealand, and this is hands down one of the best holiday parks we’ve visited. It is small, cozy, and has a wonderful atmosphere—much better than the massive, impersonal campsites.nThe Highlights:n• The Host: It seems there is a new owner, and he is fantastic! Super friendly, welcoming, and clearly takes great pride in the park.n• The Kitchen: Absolutely top-tier. It’s exceptionally well-equipped with everything you could need: plenty of pots and pans, a French press, air fryer, toaster, sandwich maker, and a large oven. There are also multiple sinks, making it easy to cook even when others are around.n• Facilities: The common area is very cozy with plenty of seating, a TV, and a DVD collection. The showers and toilets were spotless and very well-maintained.n• The Site: Our camping pitch was spacious and didn't feel cramped at all. There’s also a great BBQ area and reliable Wi-Fi.nThe location is perfect for exploring the peninsula. Everything feels very well-cared for and high-quality. If you're looking for a peaceful, clean, and friendly place to stay, this is it!nHighly recommended!

Great location and excellent fish & chip van down the road in village. Bird song incredible!nNot the usual happy Kiwi welcome and smile but helpful with coins for washing. Facilities tired & quite shabby compared with other sites on our trip…also hardly any hooks in washrooms to hang things on. With a bit of work it could be so much better.

We stopped by this campsite around 21 pm because we were hoping to take a quick shower after a long day. And maybe sleep there if it was possible. In many campsites it is sometimes possible to pay for showers via QR code or coins, and pay the morning for the night, so we thought it might be similar here. Of course, we understand that every campsite has its own rules.nnUnfortunately, the experience was very unpleasant. The person at reception started yelling at us immediately without trying to understand the situation. He even came to get me at the exit of the toilets, still shouting, instead of calmly explaining the rules.nnWe would have completely understood if access to the facilities was not allowed without a reservation. What shocked us was the level of anger and the lack of basic communication.nnA simple explanation and a bit of kindness would have made the situation completely different.nnSir, you really need to learn to relax.

It's a simple park, oldish style, but amicable, well situated and the lady at reception is very friendly and helpful.nnRecommended if you want to visit the area.nnClean facilities. Good cooking facilities. Good laundry facilities.
