If you only have time to visit one volcano in Auckland, make it this one. As the highest natural point in the city 196 meters, Mount Eden offers the absolute best 360-degree views of the isthmus. It is a dormant volcanic cone that holds deep historical and cultural significance for the Māori people.nThe Climb AccessibilityVehicle Access: Important! You cannot drive to the summit anymore. Vehicles were banned a few years ago to protect the mountain.nThe Walk: You park at the base near the Tahaki Reserve or the Whau Cafe and walk up.nDifficulty: Moderate. It is a paved road/path all the way up. It takes about 15–20 minutes for an average walker to reach the top. It is steep in some sections, but there are plenty of spots to stop and catch your breath.nBoardwalks: Once at the top, there are excellent wooden boardwalks that guide you around the crater rim.
Nice 360 views. Less than three miles from sky tower with 950 feet vert, and took an hour for the loop. Definitely worth a visit. Lots of traffic lights though even when starting at 6. Streets already busy with buses and commuters.
The best place to have a bird's eye view of beautiful Auckland city.nThere are several approaches to this wonderful mountain from all sides.nComfortable walkways, neat & clean footpaths, stairs ... all converging to the summit.nMust visit while your stay in Auckland.
Beautiful view at sunset. Definitely prefer the paved walkways up to the summit than the rickety pathway Maps took us up via Rautangi Rd - if you use that route, watch out for the divots on the gravel path as one walker ahead of me slipped and would have gone down the slope without her friend grabbing her arm. The paved path is also a gentler incline. Overall a nice experience.
Theres a small parking area right where walkway to summit starts and also another small parking area by the cafe if they're full then nearest parking is at Tahaki Reserve parking area there's decent amount of of spaces there. There are toilets at the start of the walkway. Its a short 5 to 10min walk to the start of walkway from Tahaki parking lot, then another 5 to 10min to the summit. Its a loop so you can go straight and around or turn left onto the man made pathway to a lookout platform to start.
