Story

In 1998 the Wellington City Council set aside 200 hectares of retired farmland in Karori southwest of Wellington, New Zealand for a mountain bike park. Development of the Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park began almost immediately with volunteer work parties planting trees, removing pest animals and digging new tracks.By 2014 the park had grown to 250 hectares with over 40 kilometres of hand-built single track and over 35,000 native seedlings planted. Pests such as goats, sheep, and possums had been dramatically reduced with volunteers maintaining possum traps and bait stations and mustelid traps, allowing new vegetation to flourish. The park is free to use and open to both cyclists and pedestrians. Approximately 30% of its users are pedestrians. The Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park was visited by 8% of the Wellington population in 2003 according to research carried out by the Wellington City Council. It has received a recreation award from the New Zealand Recreation Association and two conservation awards from the New Zealand Department of Conservation. The park is jointly managed by the Wellington City Council and Makara Peak Mountain Bike Park Supporters Inc.

Makara peak mountain bike park is a fun place to visit. With a big range of different path from easy to hard. Every route can reach to the makara peak, with beautiful views, you can see cook strait, windmill, karori town, makara town, and mt Kaukau. Better to garb a water bottle and some food, start at entrance is all uphills, there are some rest areas with table and chair. At the top of the peak, they offer free tap water, also two chargers for e-bike. Choose your route be careful. Some are quite hard for beginners. There are many free carpark at entrance, a bike shower area to wash your bike after finish ride, 2 toilet and 1 shower room.
Awesome place. AMAZING views and great place for family rides. DOES Need some REMINDER SAFETY signs at the trail heads. For example, NO STOPPING OR BLOCKING THE MIDDLE OF A TRACK..... DON'T RIDE A TRAIL ABOVE YOUR LEVEL OF ABILITY. If you must stop, get off to the inside of the track immediately. I nearly broke my neck in a big accident after coming across a inexperienced rider on a advanced track who stopped and left his bike unattended blocking the bike line of the track, while he went into the bush to help another young fellow inexperienced rider that rode off the track. I crashed into his bike.. Endo'd hard and fast over the handle bars landing on my head, twisted my neck, severe concussion and a trip to hospital and a MRI on a possible broken neck. Very luckily I escaped without permanent serious injury... This time..... PLEASE PEOPLE THINK ABOUT SAFETY ON THE TRAILS. Ride safe, ride considerately, and have fun.....
Simply one of my all-time favourite places to ride. Beautifully designed, maintained and mint condition trails. The views are stunning on a bluebird.
A solid place for loops. Can craft uphill and downhill combo as per your needs.
One of the best places in Wellington to go and ride. Has evolved and developed over time progressively and is very popular with the local scene. There is a new carpark area with toiliet and shower block at the time of this review it isn't known if the showers are fully functioning. A myraid of graded trails from G2 - G6, but predominantly are G3 - G4. Check out trail forks for exact details. Currently no deddicated shuttle service so its a hearty climb from the bottom making your way up to the summit approx 20 - 40mins depeding on fitness and choice of direction, albeit not as agressive in gradient too climb as such it serves well for hill / interval training. Terrain is mostly rock based no clay / sand or loam like Rotorua mixed with tree roots and hard pack. It can get incredibly windy at the summit so dress for the weather however its been said that Makara runs well in the wet as well. Overall it is an excellent MTB park and worth a repeat visit or connecting visit with the other Bike areas in the region.
Lots of good trails and great facilities. All the trails were well signposted and the views were excellent on the clear day I was there anyway. Must be great for Wellington residents to have this park so close. Keep up the good work.
Need some signs with rules at the head of each trail. I came off hard and got concussed because a rider that shouldn't have been on the track, inexperienced and on a harder track, had stopped left the track and blocked the track with his bike... Some basic rules need to be shown as reminders... Don't stop and block the track ...... Etc
Makara Peak is home to some of the best mountain bike trails in the world. There's something here for everyone from the easy climb up Koru, a dedicated skills development area to the expert only Vertigo and Trickle Falls. A swing bridge was built in 2016 allowing a new, easy uphill climb to the summit over the aptly named Easy Up trail.
Amazing bike park with great trails, There is a skilz area for jumps it’s good but not the best but everything else is amazing
Best mountain bike park in Wellington! You can find a trail that you are capable of riding and also a trail that is more challenging for you. My favourite trails are Peak Flow and Pohatu.
