Popular free camping spot. You can freedom camp anywhere within the Lake area minus the furtherest road which is restricted. We stayed a Friday evening the boy racer club stopped after dark. The toilets were plumbed in which was nice. The floor was muddy which was acceptable. Arrive early to secure a good location. We arrived at 3pm and our ideal location was taken. During winter the grass spots get really soft. Bring bread for the ducks.
Great free spot that we used on our trip across NZ. Two clean public bathrooms on the site overlooking the lake. Loads of spaces around the lake, so we didn't worry about turning up late.nnBit confusing at first, but anyone with a self-contained camper can stay anywhere on the lake, but people with non self-contained units must stay in the designated spaces.
A beautiful place to stay. Although popular, it was very peaceful. It has an area for self contained vehicles and also one for non self contained. You can also fish a max of two trout per person and unlimited perch.
What a fabulous place to stay. Beautiful and scenic with lovely walks. Plenty of CSC parks with lake views and an elevated site for NCSC limited to 4 per night but there were many more. Long drop toilets so not so good with the number of NCSC. We only used them once and that was enough.
Super full with camper vans in summer. The boats and cars can be obnoxious especially in the day time but it generally quitens down after sunset. Toilets in reasonable good nick considering how many people are located in this area. The lake is murky, good for sports. Lots of motorised vehicles going though so it's hard to take the kayak out when it's busy. Fishing is permissable with a fishing license.
