This is a fantastic spot and the council are very generous in allowing freedom camping here but on the Monday night we stayed we experienced until way after dark a constant stream of very noisy cars continually driving in to the beach car park and out again as fast and noisy as they could. It was a big worry when some of them also drove around the parking area with the risk of them hitting our vehicle. There were also jet skis and speedboats racing around the lake. This all put us off staying another night so we went elsewhere which was a big shame.
6 NSC spots where i was ,with toilets and a garbage bin. My van neighboors were feeding a cute duck family even up here.
Great freedom camping spot for both self contained and non self contained vehicles.nThere is easy access to the toilet facilities near by.nThe beach and coastal walkway is an easy 10/15 minute walk away - on the other site of lake Rotomanu.nPlenty of spaces to park, so there should aways be room for you to park up.
Freedom campers beware nRangers check at 5am and issue an immediate $400 fine if you’re not in the exact correct park. This happened due to an honest mistake, even though NSC parks were available nearby. No warning or discretion given. Double-check signage carefully.
Popular free camping spot. You can freedom camp anywhere within the Lake area minus the furtherest road which is restricted. We stayed a Friday evening the boy racer club stopped after dark. The toilets were plumbed in which was nice. The floor was muddy which was acceptable. Arrive early to secure a good location. We arrived at 3pm and our ideal location was taken. During winter the grass spots get really soft. Bring bread for the ducks.
