This was a great experience! Best $10 ever spent to enter the ski access road. Beautiful 30min drive up to the parking area. 45min steep climb up to the lake. Stunning scenery it is well worth the 2hr round trip walk. 3hrs total from the beginning of the drive. We went in the middle of the summer so access was safe and easy. There was even some snow still up there which was fun!
Stumbled across this lake by accident but I’m very glad I found it because it’s such a beautiful sight. I would recommend as it’s only about a 40 minute walk from the car park too. Only issue is that it costs $10 to drive up to the top of the remarkables. I would advise using a map of some sort as the track can be a little confusing to follow as there are many different routes to different places.
For only 10 NZD you can drive to the top with greats views. Easy to do with a campervan. The first bit of the walk is on the slopes and not so nice but the second halve and the view on the lake are great.
This was a great walk and we managed to get up there a couple of days before the snow really arrived. We walked to the lake and carried onto the Summit and I look forward to taking my son up there next season. I totally recommend this walk
Even the drive up to the car park is a great journey in itself. After about 13 km you reach the car park and then it’s an Awesome short walk up to a glacier lake with a stunning view over the Remarkables. It’s a bit steep at the beginning of the walk but it gets easier the higher you get up. There are also a few lost sheep along the way. The Flora is amazing and rich in colour. Nature is beautiful.
Beautiful walk up during summer, I would recommend it for everyone of fall fitness levels. The walk is easy it is not as steep as some make it out to be and the reward of the view at the top is worth it.
According to the Dwarves of Durin's Folk, after Durin the Deathless had awoken at Mount Gundabad in the north of the Misty Mountains, he travelled south until he came upon this lake. He looked down in it and saw a crown above his head, being the reflection of stars above, despite the fact it was day and the stars should not have been visible. Taking the crown as a sign, he founded the great city of Khazad-dûm beneath the mountains that fed Mirrormere. A pillar called Durin's Stone was placed along the banks of the lake to mark the event. During the events that led up to the War of the Ring, the Fellowship passed by the lake after escaping Moria. Despite their hurry, Gimli would not leave without looking in the lake. Frodo Baggins joined him, and both saw Durin's crown. The Fellowship of the Ring escaped the Mines of Moria and crossed Mirrormere, with the snowy mountains feeding the lake clearly visible in Aragorn's background, I reenacted this scene. The current name of the lake is Lake Alta on Google Maps. You can also find the same location if you search as Dimrill Dale. When I went to Mirrormere on a daylight when Varda's stars were not visible, I saw Durin's crown too. I hope those who read this article will see it one day. *For more information about the Lord of the Rings and New Zealand secret gems, follow me on YouTube and instagram safaklion
It was a magnificent walk. It was snowing during that time. It took us 2 hours to return. Very fulfilling.
Great hiking
Lake alta is around 45 min to 1 hour one way trek from the remarkable ski area. You just have to follow the yellow color sign wooden marks to your way to the top. There is no other proper sings on this way but the view is breathtaking. I went there in dec 2018 and a part of lake was frozen.
