About

Kawakawa Station Walk is a unique private coastal walking experience at the Southernmost tip of the North Island.

Story

The iconic Kawakawa Station is one of the Wairarapa’s oldest Sheep Stations. Located along the South Wairarapa coastline with sweeping views across to the South Island, Kawakawa Station is 40 minutes from the bustling wine village of Martinborough, yet it truly feels another world away.

Our spectacular three-day walk offers breath-taking views of the rugged natural landscape of New Zealand high country, native bushland, a spectacular coastline, streams and crystal-clear braided rivers, all set amongst our working sheep station. The walk is fully catered with comfortable lodgings that are unique to Kawakawa Station, and all have their own story to tell.

If you wish to experience something special at Kawakawa Station, try sleeping under the stars in our gorgeous ‘Star Gazer’ Lotus Belle Glamping Tent. Surrounded by native bush in a private setting you’ll enjoy all the comforts and amenities, including a well-appointed kitchen and bathroom complete with an outdoor bath. Suitable for couples and families.

Kawakawa Station Walk is a journey of connection, discovery, enlightenment, adventure and experience of a bygone era. We look forward to welcoming you to our special piece of paradise.

This walk was really fun. Each day was a different type of scenery which broke up the walking nicely. The huts were all very comfortable and I really appreciated the hot shower water, comfortable beds, and good food. We really appreciated the wood burners in the huts as the nights got cold. Navigation was easy and the amount of walking not too testing. The first day up to the "Ant" is a good puff especially in hot weather. This is a fantastic experience. Go for it!
A Captivating Escape at Kawakawa Station My recent three-day hike at Kawakawa Station was nothing short of extraordinary. The scenery was beautiful, each day offering a variety of terrain and the food was sooo good - 10/10! Kawakawa station offers an unforgettable escape! I definitely recommend Kawakawa Station to anyone looking for a decent hike each day and an exceptional hospitality experience.
Our group of 8 had a wonderful 3 days at Kawakawa Station. The first 2 days of walking were quite challenging for our group and left us feeling like we'd done well and pushed ourselves. The accommodation was modern, comfortable with loads of character - it was very clean with lovely soft towels. The showers were amazing and so welcome at the end of each day. The meals were so delicious and with really generous portions, plenty left over for yummy lunches. Overall this was a fabulous experience and Rebecca was a friendly welcoming host, who has created a wonderful experience.
Recently completed by a group of 10 of us, we had a great time. Stunning views, plenty of variety in the terrain, fully catered with such great food the baking!!, loved the hot showers and comfy beds each night. And being off grid was actually rather nice! Decent boots and walking poles are a good idea. Thankyou so much to Rebecca and team for this wonderful walk. Highly recommend for those who want to try multi-day walks or if you're after a wee bit more pampering than you might be used to.
Just completed this 3 day trip with 9 friends, and couldn't recommend it more. The scenery was stunning, and different on each day's hike; the food was delicious and bountiful dessert every night!; the accommodations were comfy and thoughtful; and being off-grid was the icing on the cake. Book today!
I HIGHLY recommend this 3 day walk. Day One, walking along the beautiful Wairarapa Coastline then up, up, up farmland tracks, with gorgeous coastal views over the rugged Wairarapa Coast and Kaikoura Range....stunning!!! Arriving at Jacobs Hut was so welcoming at the end of a good tramp. The food was EXCEPTIONAL, thank you Rebecca, you are an amazing cook. Day Two.....wow, beautiful bush and bird song along the ridge. Quite challenging for all of our feet and knees coming down, but we felt very proud of ourselves once we had finished the day and arrived at Purple Hut. What can I say about that??!! Purple Hut was just beautiful and again the food was OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! We enjoyed having our well deserved G & T's with some beautiful lamb and fresh salads and Chocolate Brownie with Raspberry Couli and Cream for dessert......so yummy. Day Three was a lovely meandering walk out through farmland and rivers. A lovely way to end the walk for us 60 year olds. Such a stunning spot. Give it a go, you wont regret it :-
Loved this special place. The first 4 hour ascent was in rain, which only enhanced the entire experience as once we reached the top at 615m we were in the clouds. Surreal . Cannot believe I experienced all this breathtaking beauty . Then the sun came out and when we reached Jakobs Hut we wrung out our wet clothing and dried it in the glorious sunshine. The South Island was then sited from our perfect camp Colleen Mannix January 5 2024
This walk is fantastic! The walk is beautiful-it pays to be fit but so worth the climb-the views are stunning. The huts are very comfortable and fabulous showers after a days walking. And the food! Amazing. The family who run the walk are such great hosts as well. Couldn't recommend highly enough.
A challenging but rewarding three day hike through a variety of terrain on this beautiful remote coast. Beautiful panoramic views from the ridgelines. Don’t underestimate the walk. Not long distances each day but can be slow going in parts and track all but disappears at times. Multiple river crossings on final day. Daily meals and food provided for lunch and snacks are fantastic. Accomodation over the three nights is good and hot showers and flushing toilets are ‘the icing on the cake’.
Cannot rave highly enough about this 3 day hike! Challenging walks but not too hard and views at every turn, fully catered with the most delicious food, and 3 gorgeous, spotlessly clean, fun accomodation spots. Rebecca and Ian the hosts were so great, and went over and above to make sure we were having a great time as well as being safe. I would go back in a heartbeat
