Story

Well-maintained conservation region and island gem, with educational information and Māori history staggered throughout the walks. 3.5 hours gave heaps of time to explore all the tracks at a slow pace!
Great walk and awesome scenary, tracks are easy and most of them are pram accessible. Would be great for a picnic. The ferry ride was smooth and easy. You can bring food, there is nothing to purchase on the island so make sure to stock up. There are toilets, and a water fountain for refills.
The ferry takes you to Matiu/Somes Island in 25 mn, once you get there you can walk around a few paths to the different parts of the Island within a couple hours. You can bring your lunch and make sure not to leave any trash behind you.
A delightful nature reserve accessed by a pleasant ferry crossing. It is good to see the effort put into protecting the wildlife
We took advantage of sunny day and enjoyed a gorgeous 20min boat ride from queen’s wharf to island. We were warmly welcomed by DOC staff who got us to do a biosecurity check and introduced us to precautions for keeping island pest free and then we were free to explore. You can take a map of the island from the hut, to help you keep track of where you are on the island. The trails are signposted as well. Give 3- 4 hours for good exploring. Interesting wandering around the island and enjoying all the views and history. There is accommodation on the island, but this needs to be pre-booked. There are no cafes/food outlets so pack a picnic and find a nice spot to enjoy it, plenty of seats and tables. Need to take rubbish back with us. Overall, it was a lovely half-day trip and we enjoyed every moment.
Definitely worth the stop! Easy walk with a lot of history. We spotted several interesting BIRDS, saw Wetas in the 'Weta hotel' and some incredible views
The jewel in Wellington Harbour, this island nature reserve is ideal for day trips and overnight stays. See an amazing array of wildlife from Tuatara and Giant Wetas to Little Blue Penguins and Geckos and Skinks. There are also some amazing views from the old gun emplacements and from other numerous vantage spots atound the island. The island is maintained by DoC and include a visitor centre which outlines the facinating history of the use of the island. It is incredible to find such a treasure within an easy boat ride from the centre of Wellington City. I encourage everyone to take the trip!!
Take a tent and stay overnight on Soames. Kitchen and bathroom facilities. Night is the best time to see all the wildlife, tuatara, giant weta, penguins. Also saw a sea horse snorkelling to the left of beach. Terrific place.
A good place for all the picnic lovers and nature lovers. There is a ferry service operated by metlink which takes you to and fro to the Somes island from Days bay or Wellington CBD.
Amazing. Definitely one of the top things to see in Wellington. A beautiful day so my two Australian guests and I headed to Matiu/ Domes via the East West ferry from Eastbourne. A great welcome from DOC ranger who clearly explained the importance of the conservation work on the island and a bit of history. Visitors need to be vigilant, responsible and make sure not to bring anything on to the island that would harm the flora or fauna. We had a wonderful walk all over the island comfy sturdy walking shoes a must !. Stopping at different points of interest as well as just stopping to listen to the beautiful birds. The old Quarantine station was interesting too, you could imagine all sorts of animals being there while they served their time before going to mainland NZ. Historic photos and history on display too of the people and life on the island during War. Many people were detained as possible threats to NZ during war. Lots more interesting things and places and beautiful native birds and animals . Pack your lunch, get your walking shoes on, take a coat weather can change so be prepared and go see this gem in the harbour. Love you Wellington.
