After a long red eye to Auckland; we wanted something easy to do for the first day. Howick came up in research & we stopped by. It’s a look into historical New Zealand village. Lots of historical buildings & info. Beautiful gift shop & very laid back. Pay the ticket & walk around. Lady running the gift shop gave us a run down of the village, history & was pleasant to chat with before venturing around. Lots of beautiful plants, foliage & charming history. Made for lots of beautiful photographs on my film camera.
An amazing voyage into the past and a great way to really experience and explore early settler history in New Zealand. As I am personally born and bred in this area it really is special for me and a way to keep in touch with my ancestors and the voyage that brought us to these shores. A great half day can be spent here and every now and again there is a “live day” that has locals dressed up in period costume and working in the village. Also a very peaceful place that really adds to the vibe. One of Aucklands hidden gems.
Honestly, you have to visit. One of the most vivid memories of Auckland. Amazing museum that is so important to visit and upkeep. Made a little reel about it on Instagram. Perfect little place with so much soul!
Such a lovely outing for the day to Howick historic village. What was New Zealand like when colonised by English in 1840? As a worldrankìng University of Auckland Arts graduate in history and media, accepted into postgraduate studies, I greatly enjoy the historical construct, what happened from first person perspective objective and second person perspective government and media subjective? It was a simpler life in the 1800s than too much technology and environmental degradation, yet people and countries still had problems. I regressed Professionally all my past lives, and in 1800s I was a Mayfair, England upper class wife, my husband an accountant, had one daughter, was a piano teacher, was daughter myself of a Doctor and Nurse my stepgrandparent and grandmother in this lifetime I never met in person due to being adopted. I was stabbed to death at 36 years old and was in local newspaper, proper burial. I was there and gave upper class advice for Treaty of Waitangi 1840 to be signed, hence in this lifetime speak out in written form vehemently about the importance of New Zealand citizens obeying Treaty of Waitangi 1840 paternal English side of education. Education especially University is the best investment is my personal belief, people can no longer keep being too lazy for University and relying too heavily on a workplace only for 21st Century living. At the Howick Historical village it is shown highly educated were rare yet alleviated social and racial injustice more with their refinement. People came to New Zealand worked the land very hard for development, and some as village describes even illiterate. Dame School taught the younger generations for evolution. It was a horse and cart era, where there were more nutrients in food buying from general store no preservatives over counter, chapel, justice system with law. The main home here at Howick historical village was a huge family home, with tables waiting to enjoy dinner at dinner table with service, piano playing was enjoyed as was book reading and human celebrations no internet at xmas, machines knitting clothing. There is a lot of enjoyment being away from shopping malls, endless cars on roads, and expectant hungry mouths at fast food lines. In 21st century, children are very expensive, and a lot just the science of conception, not from truest love marriage as per book Soulmates by Author Rita Rogers. Truest 1+1=2 love of which only one exclusive pair cause less consumerism. Unwanted, unloved children and elderly cause major problems in society and schools. Team sports and group of like minded people alleviate a lot, as does paying attention to health. As per book Mind that Child by author Simon Rowley, parents not financially or emotionally providing for, babies just childbirth orgasm with growing up low intellects 50-100, even illiterate and taken advantage of, he writes with of with first hand experiences in New Zealand society, disgusted and horrified. Not all people are good. The main point here, is that people that immigrated here from England in 1840s worked the land and celebrated life too much for efforts to be taken so lightly and for granted. 21st century is one of intellect and humanity. The residual energy of the land and peoples ancestors is always there and not to be forgotten, taken for granted.
Reasonable entry fee, good map and signage. Our group spent 2.5 hours reading all about the history of the Fencibles. Small children's play room where they can interact with toys and dress up. Good exhibits and informative.
