As the best rated hostel and Lonely Planet’s “Our Pick” of places to stay in Taupo; Finlay Jack’s backpackers is the place to stay! We like to think of ourselves and just some young guys running a sweet as hostel, plus we’ve got a dog (give him a follow on Instagram @BiggieTheHostelDog).

Taupo is the adventure capital of New Zealand, some say of the whole world. If you’re looking to jump out of a plane or off a cliff, or simply discover the beautiful scenery of Great Lake Taupo and the famous neighbouring Tongariro domain; the Finlay Jack’s squad are keen to help you out. We’ve tried and tested pretty much everything round here, so you can trust us to give you a good time!

Finlay Jack’s have a range of different sized dormitories and private rooms and offer excellent facilities such as free parking and wifi, bikes to hire and Netflix and X-Box (for those more rainy/hungover days). Not that impressed, much to improve. They have really good ratings, but it feels a bit like they don’t care enough to make it really worth it. The beachy surfvibe is really nice, location perfect and nice beanbags/hang-mats to chill in. The kitchen could be better for the stars of this hostel though, not that many things available or organized. The staff is okay, didn’t feel like they really wanted to help me though, it’s the attitude. Didn’t make me feel very welcome and don’t respond to your questions on booking either. People staying in the hostel are very nice! Also, doesn’t feel super clean. There are bugs next to the bed…the bed however is comfortable. You have your own little space with two pillows and roll curtain. I didn’t have wifi in my bed though, throughout the hostel it was great! The shower in the bathroom is very simple, would again expect more because of the stars.
Best hostel showers I've seen so far in New Zealand. Nice kitchen and friendly staff. Each bed in the dorms has its own curtain which is really useful so the 10-bed rooms are ok also. The only problem is that the toilet and showers are in a seperate building so can be cold, and there's a lot of noise.
A typical backpacker, pretty busy. Wonderful location, close to the town, walking distance to paknsav and the warehouse. But 1 star for the house keeping staff, i was sitting in the room but the guy just opened the door and came in without knocking the door or any notice. When i found he's here to do the cleaning, i said thank you but totally no response. After he finished his work and was about to leave, i said thank you again, still no response, not even a look. It's just like i didn't exist to him... Maybe he just help exchange here, but not friendly experience to me as a guest.
A solid basic hostel to stay in. Kitchen was a bit of a mess, not sure what standards guests are held to when comes to cleaning up after themselves BUT this is likely not the hostels fault.
biggie the hostel dog is the most attraktiv dog iv ever met. his brother Eli is a close second. best hostel iv ever stayed at. 10/10. Finlays brother is a solid 9.27/10
Wow! Everything is very tidy and clean! The stuff is very friendly ! I only can recommend this extrordinary hostel!

Great, friendly, informative staff, including Biggie the Dog. We had three teenage kids with us and they were entertained by the games and local activities mostly off the information board in the lounge. Kitchen and rooms were very cool. I’m in the hospitality business and was impressed. Highly recommend the place!!!Rooms: 4/5
