We did not expect the winds and waters to be so rough when we got to Lake Taupo. The tour duo’s immediate disclaimer was we may not see the Māori carvings, so either we refund or reschedule. We decided a cruise along the lake regardless of whether we will get to see it or not will still be enjoyable. Sitting inside the warm boat cabin, with coffee and their famous muffin is not such a bad idea. And boy where we happy we did. Yes the muffin was good but as we were turning the corner the winds ceased as if beckoning us to come and view the Māori carvings. The best part of the trip were the two guides. They were really warm, accommodating and funny as heck. I think one of them is in the wrong gig and should be in Comedy Central as a cool stand up comic. Overall it was a great experience to have.
We went on 1st Jan at 5pm, it was a nice and sunny day but not extremely hot since it was approaching evening time, we made it to the carvings after 30 minutes and it was beautiful! The Captain Sarah was very friendly and very knowledgeable local guide, she told us lots of history about Taupo and Taupo lake. When we arrived at the Maori carvings one of the crew ladies explained the history behind the carving and it was super interesting! On the way back to the harbour Captain Sarah has allowed guests to go up to and take photos of the guests holding the wheel as if they were the one crusing the boat! Overall wonderful experience and will do it again if we go to Taupo again!
A joyful ride with pleasant and funny staff members. I learned a lot of information about the lake, nature around, and the history of the rock carving that was the end point of our loop cruise ride. There was a free tapped water available at the ship's deck, and menu with both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks.
Such an memorable experience! Loved being on the boat and learning the history of Taupō + seeing the Māori Rock Carvings. Made a booking through the website BookMe, for the 12:30pm session. Unfortunately the staff were experiencing technical difficulties, and there was no mic commentary. Delicious muffins and friendly knowledgable staff! A good value for money, if you are looking for something to do in Taupō.
We had booked the cruise about an hour or so before heading there online. The marina did have a fair amount of parking. Once there it was easy enough to get on using the confirmation email. We did miss out a person and was able to pay on boarding. The ship had WiFi and the ticket came with a drink voucher. The upper deck had a few seats but the lower deck had booths. The Captains seat is on the upper deck. You are also able to head out front of the boat too. My nephews were able to drive the boat on the way back. The cruise went along the lakeside before heading towards the lake to the caving. They did give some interesting information about some of the areas we passed through including the carving. I quite like boat rides, particularly standing out front, so I enjoyed it. The carving was also quite interesting to see, particularly all the other sculptures around the main carving. It was an enjoyable activity on the lake.
I have both good and bad things to say about it as I’m usually a fair critic of things. Rating is mostly based on the delay and the price of the trip being worth it. Bad: the boat had issues with power which resulted in a lot of people waiting for a while in the hot blazing sun. Checks should have been done ahead of time. My father who was on crutches had a hard time of it. We arrived early but left late. The photo op time when we arrived at the Maori carving was disappointing. It made me question whether it was worth the price. Good: the muffins were yummy and the customer service was great, the ladies were awesome and the captain was good.
We took a Friday 1.30pm scenic cruise to the Ngātoroirangi Māori Rock Carvings with live fishing demonstration. We pre-booked the night before and as they mentioned light refreshments on board, I made a notation on the booking that my mum was coeliac. On the day we boarded the boat without delay or any issue and were able to easily get seats with a view. The cruise to the rock carvings was comfortable and the skipper was very informative and engaging. The lovely attendants on board made freshly baked muffins, and we were pleasantly surprised when my mum was presented with her very own gluten free muffin which had been cooked separately to the others. They provided tea and coffee and had a bar available if anyone wanted to buy an alcoholic beverage. The cruise was reasonably priced, comfortable, interesting, and ran on time. I would definitely recommend this tour.
We had an amazing trip on the top deck with Captain Sarah- a move of information and such a great sense of humour. The crew were also a fabulous team - we forgot to get a muffin! A grand finale to our NZ trip. Thank you all so much. Ps thanks for the tip about the Huka Falls- we would have missed that!
This is a must do tour. Chris Jolly team ladies were amazing and most hospitable. Great sense of humor and kept us entertained. Awesome muffins and other snacks that we served. One of the best tour operators I have ever had. Thank you team for making our experience memorable.
A great scenic tour of the late Taupo and Māori rock carving. The team that runs the tour were fun, informative and engaging to the tour participants. There’s coffee, refreshments and muffins available during the duration of the tour. I recommend seating at the upper deck, back part of the boat where you could have a great view of the lake without any obstructions. You’re free to move around the boat as the tour guide will point out some interesting sights as you move along. The guide will allow you to try maneuvering the boat but with their instructions and supervision. My husband and I were happy and gained knowledge about the majestic lake Taupo’s significance and importance as well as the danger that comes with it! Thank you very much for the amazing experience!
