Story

The Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch, New Zealand, is the transitional pro-cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Christchurch opened in August 2013. It was designed by architect Shigeru Ban and seats around 700 people. The site, on the corner of Hereford and Madras Streets in Latimer Square, is several blocks from the permanent location of ChristChurch Cathedral, which was significantly damaged in the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.LocationThe building is on a section allocated to the Anglican church in Christchurch's original 1850 survey opposite Latimer Square. It was originally the site of St John the Baptist Church, the first church built in permanent materials by Anglicans in Christchurch, which was demolished after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. The St John parish gave the land, and in return can use the building and will keep it once a permanent cathedral can be used.HistoryFollowing the earthquakes, Shigeru Ban was invited to Christchurch by Rev. Craig Dixon, the cathedral's marketing and development manager, to discuss a temporary cathedral that could also host concerts and civic events. The concept was developed during that visit. Ban, who is characterised as a "disaster architect", designed the building pro bono; Ban collaborated with Christchurch architecture firm Warren and Mahoney.

A must see if you’re in town. A piece of architectural genius. Read about the construction and design of this building to understand why it’s so interesting. Run by volunteers who are happy to explain how this project was created. There is also a small souvenir shop right at the entrance.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Great welcome from the volunteers and a lovely service from the Priest and members of St. Luke's. We just turned up as tourists Eucharist at 12.05 each day and left feeling valued. We wish you God's Blessings. From St. Mary's in Durham, England.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
No tickets are required. This is the church referred to as the 'cardboard cathedral'. You can see the walls and ceiling are made of cardboard along with many of the other furniture items. The building is unique because of the materials used to build it. It is a very interesting structure and worth a visit, even for those amongst us who are not religious. Lovely volunteers manage a delightful small shop at the front of the building.
This place is amazing! If you're architecture lover, then this cathedral must be on your list. The exterior look simple but the interior will amaze you.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Beautiful and serene, quietly moving too. Smaller than I expected but still had a real presence. Powerful story of community. Amazing that the stained glass of the original cathedral was captured to be replicated tooVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Attended for the installation of their new Dean. It is definitely a transitional building, designed for a short term life but still they have managed to create a building filled with light, space and a sense of family. The new Dean should do well here.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Temporary, transitional, Christchurch cathedral replacing the original one destroyed in the 2011 earthquake. Most-welcoming hosts. A MUST visit when in the city. Designed with environmental impact in mind, the cathedral has embraced every aspect of sustainability in its design. Faithful also recovered the cathedra / bishop’s chair and the pulpit from the wreckage of the former destroyed building. We loved the new, stained glass windows.
Very beautiful Church, modern and respectful temple, amazing architectureVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
This is one of the most amazing structures I have ever visited. Built in a period of between 10 and 18 months, it was erected to serve as a temporary site for the parishioners of Christchurch Cathedral, which was destroyed in the series of earthquakes in 2010 and 2011. Huge cardboard tubes serve as major structural elements, but rather than being ugly, they are quite beautiful in the overall aesthetic design. It is a building that must be seen in person; photographs simply don’t do it justice. Even though it was built to serve while the main cathedral is being rebuilt, this is a permanent structure that will continue serving the resilient people of Christchurch.
As a Christian, visiting a cathedral made of paper was a unique experience. A lot of work has been done to restore the cathedral that collapsed in the earthquake across the street, and it is said that it has not yet been decided whether the cathedral made of paper will exist once it is completed. It may be demolished, so I recommend going there before then.
