Story

The Bridge of Remembrance is one of two main war memorials in Christchurch, New Zealand. It is dedicated to those who died in World War I, and serves as a memorial for those who participated in two World Wars as well as subsequent conflicts in Borneo, Korea, Malaya, and Vietnam. Owned by Christchurch City Council, it is located on the Cashel Street Bridge at the head of City Mall. The Bridge of Remembrance was repaired and strengthened following the 2011 Christchurch earthquake and was reopened with a rededication ceremony held on Anzac Day in 2016.GeographyThe archway was built over the east end of the Cashel Street bridge that links Oxford and Cambridge Terraces over the Avon River. It became a pedestrian precinct on Anzac Day (25 April) in 1977. East of it is the business district and the main pedestrian mall. In the area between the bridge and Victoria Square are the Floral Clock, Law Courts, Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings, Our City and the Scott Statue.HistoryEdward George Wright, a civil engineer and contractor, won the contract of building a bridge over the Avon River at Cashel Street and completed the work in May 1873. Wright was paid £509 for his work, but there was in addition a separate tender for work on the approaches.

An amazing stone bridge with an archway built to remember our fallen ANZAC soldiers. The bridge crosses the Avon river in the heart of Christchurch city and has lots to see and do nearby including shopping, eating, drinking and sightseeing. There are some very big fish and eels in the river and you can feed them from the steps next to the bridge.
The bridge of remembrance crosses the Avon river in the heart of Christchurch city center. The main city buzz starts from here. These is always some event going on most of the weekend throughout summer. There are definitely lots to see and do nearby including shopping, eating, drinking and sightseeing. In the Avon river, there are some very big fish and eels can be seen through clear water. There is option to feed the eels from the steps next to the bridge.
A very large and imposing structure over the river. It is quite easy to spot once you're near the river. It is worth the walk over just to admire it's size and its importance.

Cool bridge remembering lost ones from NZ. Nice area to pass a little time
Absolutely beautiful landmark. We had a nice day to have a quick walk around here. Lots of stalls available that offer fast food and desserts. In general I enjoyed feeeding the eels. Must visit while.visiting Christchurch.
Nice place to get pics. Can get there using the tram and very nice spot to grab something to eat at the market. I recommend parking at the botanic garden car park and enjoy the walk to the bridge alot to see and do on your way.
Really nice memories caught the tram across the road
Love the view from the bridge.. Amazing place to take a good shot for you photo collections.. :- Definitely Worth to visit!! For sure..
Beautiful tribute for the soldiers that fought in the WWI for their country. It was opened on the 11.11.1924. The Imperial Loin on each side look nice. If you get to the middle of the bridge and look over the edge on the wall you will see the words QVID NON PRO PATRIA What will man not do for his country .
