The surf lesson itself was great, the beach is stunning, and the value for money is excellent.nnHowever, the welcome was seriously lacking. When we arrived, no one greeted us, they just asked what we were doing there and seemed annoyed when we said we’d booked a lesson. I was told to sign a waiver, so I went into another room where a woman Lily, I think and a long haired staff member were sitting. Neither of them acknowledged me, no hello, no eye contact, nothing. My partner had the exact same experience. It was awkward and unprofessional, and we honestly considered leaving.nnOur instructor, Dimitrius, seemed disinterested at first, but once we got to the beach, he was great. His feedback was direct and really helpful, and we left feeling like we’d learned a lot.nnSurfing is meant to be fun, but the way we were greeted made it feel like we weren’t meant to be there. A simple hello and a smile would’ve completely changed the experience.
We stayed over the 2024 Christmas period for three days. Unlike other reviews, we really enjoyed the decor and layout of the hostel. However… despite staying Xmas Eve and Xmas Day, away from family and in a different country, the staff were very unwelcoming bordering on rude. They had their staff Christmas party in the kitchen and when guests tried to use it to cook dinner we were met with eye rolls and glares. Furthermore, they invited half of the guests and left out the other half making it very clear we were unwelcome. We were also sent to bed at 10pm on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, despite there being minimal noise levels. In general, nice hostel but not a great vibe.
My stay at Brazil’s Surf Hostel was a mixed experience. While the rooms are comfortable and the kitchen is decent enough to live well, the overall atmosphere is significantly spoiled by the attitude of the staff.nThe permanent staff, especially Fred, were incredibly unfriendly throughout my stay. A particularly frustrating example was being harshly told to go to bed after 10:00 PM, regardless of how quiet we tried to be. Fred’s manner was unnecessarily abrupt, which made the situation even more irritating.nAdditionally, the surf instructors came across as arrogant and unwelcoming, which was disappointing given the central role they play at a surf hostel. On the brighter side, the woofers were friendly and approachable, and there were one or two exceptions among the reception staff who were also pleasant.nIn summary, the hostel provides good accommodations and a decent experience if you can steer clear of the unprofessional and unfriendly permanent staff. It’s a shame because with better service, this place could truly stand out.
As a lot of the reviews below state, yes it's a bit garish in decor and tired in some areas...but there is a strange novelty to it and 90s summer camp vibe. I stayed here with a big group in August and there was something very wholesome about us all penned into a large warehouse type room complete with its own dining and lounge area, as we browsed horror films from the DVD collection. The woodfird pizza was also amazing and unlike a lot of the more modern hostels...this one actually had enough plugs close to beds!
It needs to be said that, at least in my opinion, the big tour bus groups Kiwi experience, G adventures showing up most days in high season give this hostel a bit of a weird vibe. Very loud, take up most spaces, generally hang out in their group and then leave the next morning. Not as easy to socialize as a solo traveller as in a lot of other NZ hostels. Might also be an age difference, most guests seemed to be in their early 20s or younger.nAlso once it gets cold at night there's only one small indoor lounge that gets taken up by the volunteers to watch a movie where you're welcome to stay but not quiet either.nAgree with other comments, mattresses are worn through.nStill a nice and quirky place if you come here for surfing, otherwise I'd stay maximum one night and then move on.
