We rode down from Auckland as we had discovered the Workman's cafe on a previous visit. This time we had the gurnard, salad and fries. Wow! The portions are very generous and the food was beautiful and fresh. The place is Funky, retro, kitch and they'll be something in there that will attract your eye and make you chuckle. Service was great, definitely worth a visit.

An absolutely outstanding venue in a lovely town. Eggs benedict were cooked with perfectly runny yolk and a generous portion of cold-smoked salmon. The fish of the day, terakihi, was extremely fresh, the batter crispy. Service was also excellent - attentive without being excessive. The bathrooms are clean and beautifully appointed, and even offered freshly laundered hand towels for each visitor. Matamata is a thriving hub of tourism but doesn't come across as tacky, and the Workman's is a great place to stop and refuel on a road trip

The place was full of tiny little Flies. We requested hard eggs for the Benedict and they were just cooked. Will not return. I was travelling through to do a half Ironman event in Tauranga so decided to have their prawn pasta special . Big mistake. It was clearly just reheated and the prawns were not good as I was up most of the night on the toilet.

The 4 of us went out off the cuff and had one of the tastiest meals!! Eye fillet wrapped in bacon with blue cheese sauce, seasonal veg and a small salad with baby rosti. Mango sorbet for me. De lish. We all four thought the whole thing awesome and service excellent.
