The BOPDHB’s activities range from delivering health and disability services through its hospitals here and Tauranga, community health and disability services, and mental health services, through to support functions such as the clinical directorate, corporate services, and information management services. The DHB also plans health service development, funding and purchasing a wide range of health service for the region, through 413 contracts. These contracts include primary care, aged residential care, dental services, pharmaceuticals, mental health services, laboratory services and homebased support services. The DHB has a strong focus on improving Māori health. The DHB will receive $706 million during 2015/2016 to fund these activities.

The BOPDHB has just under 3,000 fulltime and part-time staff; these include nurses, support service staff and just over 300 specialists and doctors. The Governance Board has 11 members, including the chairperson, who represent the people of the region.

Our experience at the Radiology department, was nothing less than compassionate, caring & reassuring especially from a Nurse called Carol. Thankyou for your luv & concern. You made a difference..
This would have to be the best hospital. The staff are amazing.
Clean, spacious and great staff.
The staff of the radiology department are the most friendly, helpfull and nicest peopleI have ever seen anywhere in an hospital. Thanks to all of them from the receptionnist to the lady who do the scan.
At about 9oClock my 6yr old son was having trouble getting to sleep, he complained about a sore eye and would cry because it hurt. 12.00am Saturday morning took him in to the Emergency Room. I hate this place. I try avoid coming here but because it's my son. After check in an Triage. Finally got to see a doctor at 2.30 in the morning. She said she couldn't check him while he was sleeping. So I picked him up and made him stand. As she was examining him he was still standing but drifting in and out of consciousness. She turned around said "Right" and stormed out. About 10mins later she came back and checked him and pretty much said she couldn't do anything. And suggested seeing an optometrist in the morning. And to manage the pain with Paracetamol. I asked if he could get some eye drops or something as he's sitting there in pain. She replied in a condescending manner "Is he in pain"..... even though she said manage the pain with Paracetamol. To which I replied, I didn't come here for fun. I didn't wait with him for two and a half hours just to hang out in the Emergency Department. We came because he was in pain and crying. I've called the optometrist and they're booked up till Tuesday.... they said to try the Hospital. Will run him to the Rotorua hospital an hour and a half away. Because it's Saturday and no doctors are open. Was suppose to get my 2nd Covid vaccine Jab today. That ain't happening now. And they wonder why people don't trust them? Here they are saying.. get the vaccine it will help you. But when we actually need help they don't. So why would we trust they have our best interest at heart any other time?
This hospital has amazing staff, all friendly and reassuring and helpful. In fact as I had travelled out of pukehina to come to whakatane hospital as I much prefer it there my partner who was meant to pick me up had fallen asleep sorting the kids after a few hours of calling and trying to get home not knowing anyone in whakatane anyway the lovely security guard Mark offered me a ride home went out of his way and his work hours to help me get home as he could see I was stressed. Lovely to know there are still people like this around I'll be popping back with some treats for the staff as they are absolutely top notch !
The Nurse and Doctor treating me at the Emergency Department were really amazing. I was seen immediately and fixed really quickly. The place was clean and professional and it was a life saving experience for me. Thank you so much to everyone who made this wonderful facility possible.
The medical staff including nurses are so friendly and professional! My friend was admitted to the ED for acute upper abdominal pain, the ED doctor made a swift decision to transfuse two bags of bloods, otherwise my friend could have died. The ED doctor is really experienced, she is from the USA. But, I am in doubt about some administration departments within the hospital, bureaucracy is always the hindrance for better performance! Monthly Quality Review seems to be really rare.
Horrible I came in at 3 ish in the morning I was feeling really sick like I was on the ground rolling around cause of how much my tummy hurt. No nothing check your guys cameras there and have a look at it I was in pain you guys still take your time
My partner went to Whakatane hospital for surgery on the 28th June. We were really satisfied with the help & care we received from the whole team. Just wanted to thank everyone involved before & after his surgery. We appreciate your help. A happy, hard working team really goes a long way. Love your sense of humour.
