A classic old hotel . Friendly staff dealing with a tough situation.....owners not investing to keep it updated. We got lucky....very lucky in room 25 lovely stay. But we did see room 11 and I could have stayed in there but not my lady. Old smells and very small. We are very pleased we came and stayed . It is rated a 2 star for reasons. It's location to the caves is 5 star.

Lovely location and beautiful view from the back garden. Staff is friendly as well, however the cleanliness of the place could be improved. Rooms are tiny and smelly. The decor dated and paint falling off the wall. There is mould everywhere in the bathroom and the two spa pools are not kept well. The water in them smelled mouldy, was yellowish-green and the bottom dirty. Some rooms have a coffee/tea station outside which is not kept, the water in the thermos was cold. Overall not good value for the price and the pictures on various booking websites must have been taken years and years ago.

Sure, the place has seen better days, but it was clean and well looked after. If you want 'fancy', go somewhere else. If you're fine with 'comfortable for night or two', then this is your place. Our room was basic. But, the bed was so comfy and the room looked like it had been refurbished recently. The shower was a welcome relief also. The room could have done with a fridge... But appart from that, it was perfectly fine. Would stay here again.

Alright first of all, this was a great hotel, great spacious rooms. The atmosphere was great. Just beside the waitomo caves and a few minutes drive from the other caves as well. What made me give such a bad rating is the way the staff treated me and my family. I guess this hotel is 5 stars... If you're white.

The reviews that I read before staying here were mixed with most of the negative comments about the hotel being run down. While I agree that the hotel is a bit run down, I found this to actually add to the hotel's charm. You feel like you're staying at a hotel where you're favorite murder mystery novel was set. The bed was comfy and clean. The views are wonderful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. And finally the breakfast was more than adequate. I wouldn't want to stay here more than two nights... But on the whole I would recommend if you're staying the night to see the glowworm caves.
