I'm not a museum go'er, but as I was being the tourist and we had time to kill before having to go to the airport, we visited here. At the time of our visit (end of feb 2018), there were a few expo's, the most impressive being about World War 1. The place is well thought out; exhibitions themselves as well as the visitors' flow between exhibitions. We went from learning something about some local artist (which we didn't care for), to learning about some Maori history, specifically Maori kings of the past and present, to the First World War. The latter has stuck in the mind mostly. This is due to the story telling used, images and actual items displayed and the passive-interactive nature of the exhibition. It was also very interesting to learn that I would not have been eligible for the ANZAC army draft at the time due to my weight :p

A great celebration and testimony to our local heroes. Well worth the visit. And it's free.
