Nice interior design - open atmosphere, colourful plates- Pho was not great - noodles were a bit over-cooked - meat in both the chicken and beef Pho was tough and bland Though the smaller plates that people on neighboring tables were having gave me a bit of food envy, however as I had chosen the Pho, and had become full on that, it left little room for experimentation. Next time I would try other things, and it seems like a great place to catch up with friends for drinks!
December is the time when families come home from overseas, and my cousin, Zac, is no exception. He suggested we visit popular St Kilda hotspot, Uncle. This Vietnamese fusion venue has a bar downstairs, and a restaurant upstairs. If the weather is good, you can grab a seat outside. They have a very impressive and detailed allergy menu for those who require. Their Asian fusion take on San Choi Bao was light and refreshing, but one on measly prawn. They should put in two to elevate this dish to a must-order. The Sher Wagyu brisket was tender and richly flavoured. The accompanying acidic pomelo salad had provided a welcome contrast. Side dish – Roti was warm and fresh, a must order! Mango & Shiso spring rolls with coconut foam and coconut icecream. There was a full wine menu, but being summer, we decided to go with the sangria. It was fruity, generous and totally shareable drink. The menu offered a selection of dairy-free desserts! The spring rolls were delightfully sweet and crispy. The shiso filling took a bit of getting used to. Coconut ice cream was nice and light, with a yummy mango sauce. With excellent service, an outstanding allergy menu and scrumptious food Uncle is a great choice for those dining out in St Kilda.
Delicious simple food, made with fresh ingredients and lots of flavour. When the weather is nice, food can be enjoyed on the spacious roof terrace. The only thing that can be improved is the Pho: all the right ingredients and fresh herbs, but the broth tasted like simple stock. It was fine, but didn't keep up with the rest of the delicious food here.
Fantastic Vietnamese restaurant. We sat in the rooftop area which was great on a warm night, it also had a retractable roof for inclimate weather. The food is a bit more sophisticated than you average Vietnamese restaurant and we did struggle to find something for our youngest child but there is always fries! That being said there was a tasty pho. Lots of dishes have coconut foam which is beautiful. Kids loved the desserts. Lots of very intriguing cocktails as well as a long neck of Lao beer. Service was fantastic. They have another restaurant in the city. Highly recommended.
Excellent cocktails and a delicious combination of flavors in every dish I tried off of the chef's menu.
Excellent Vietnamese restaurant. Great rooftop with welcoming staff. Food is brilliant and authentic
The food here is stellar. Really creative mix of ingredients and tastes. We had the Uncle Knows Best menu option which was just the right amount. Staff were very friendly and the decor and vibe of the place is very suited to the cuisine. Highly recommended.
Very nice place to eat. Seemed deceptively empty and casual downstairs and was pleasantly surprised on heading upstairs. The staff are *exceptional* and have absolutely amazing knowledge of the food they offer. They also make great recommendations and aren't afraid to say a dish may not be suitable due to a requirement or taste preference. The only downside is the value for money. The meals are really very small for their price. I've never before seen fries/chips at $10, nor a very small rice bowl for $4... Mini dinner-roll sized Bahn-mi for $6.50 - not to mention no rice or sides seem to be included with any dish - even curry?! It was all very well presented and very delicious and a great place, but absolutely the highest priced Vietnamese food I've ever eaten in my life.
Great outdoor area! The food is amazing. The bigger dishes are a bit expensive, but for the experience of the food/atmosphere, totally worth it! We usually get a few small dishes and mini pho's. Yum!
They had a wide range of drinks. I tried a few and all of them were really good. Food was a bit expensive for the quantity, but the money spent was totally worth it. Tried at least one item from each section and loved every single dish.
