Ulumbarra Theatre

About

Ulumbarra Theatre is the the focal point for Central Victorian communities to gather together for a diverse range of performances, functions & events.

Story

The City of Greater Bendigo and Bendigo Senior Secondary College are proud to announce the name of the latest addition to Bendigo’s thriving arts and cultural sector, Ulumbarra Theatre.

After extensive community consultation, the name Ulumbarra, meaning ‘gather together’ and ‘meeting place’ in the language of the Dja Dja Wurrung people, has been decided upon for the new state-of-the-art 1000 seat theatre currently under construction at the site of the former Bendigo Gaol.

Representing not only the use of the site as a community theatre for all to gather and enjoy the performances of local and international talent, the name reflects the original indigenous use of the site as a lookout and meeting place. The name is also representative of the multi-disciplinary nature of the performing arts and learning complex, which will result in the gathering of a variety of spaces on the site.

The adaptive reuse of the unique heritage site will result in:

- A new state-of-the-art 1,000 seat theatre with a fully equipped fly tower
- Music, dance and drama studios
- Learning kitchens
- General learning areas
- Outdoor alfresco area for BSSC students

The $25.8M project is being funded by:

- $12.3M from the Australian Government’s Regional Development Australia Fund;
- $7.5M from the Victorian Government’s Department of Education and Early Childhood Development;
- $3M from City of Greater Bendigo; and
- $3M from the Victorian Government’s Regional Development Victoria – Regional Growth Fund

*Ulumbara is also an acceptable spelling of the word.

Ulumbura theatre is an old jail of Bendigo and is a part of the proud culture. A wonderful performing arts theatre with beautiful interiors and state of the art acoustics. Attended my daughters end of year school celebration there years ago and this time attended my kids citizenship ceremony there. A wonderful experience and the way they maintain and manage it, commendable. Got a nice cafe and has plenty of parking around.
It takes imagination to take an early Victorian gaol with its grim and tragic past, and turn it into a state of the art theatre and convention space. That is exactly what has been done here in a way that is sensitive to the heritage of the structure but moves on from a place of darkness into a place of joy and light
Ulumbarra Theatre is an impressive venue that beautifully blends modern architecture with historical elements. The acoustics are fantastic, making it the perfect spot for concerts, plays, and other performances. The seating is spacious and comfortable, with excellent sightlines from every angle. The theatre is also situated in a unique setting, being part of the old Bendigo jail, which adds a historical touch. The staff are friendly and helpful, ensuring a smooth experience from arrival to departure. Ulumbarra Theatre is definitely a cultural gem in Bendigo.
Obviously the performance is why you visit but this venue is fantastic. The theatre is inside Bendigo's Old Gaol and the adaptation is brilliant. The entrance takes you by the old cells as you walk to the main foyer. The seating in the main hall is on two levels and provides excellent views of the stage. The acoustics are excellent. I'm looking forward to seeing more performances here.
Great theatre for Opera. I saw the last 2 Operas in Melbourne Opera's ring cycle. The orchestra sounded fantastic, but the 3 harps had to sit up on the right hand side of the stage. The seating is comfortable and the view of the stage very good.nThe only thing I found less than ideal was that there only seemed to be one set of toilets.nGiven that I was going to Ring Operas, I thought the trees out the front were very appropriate since the leader of the gods, Wotan, is said to have taken a branch from the World Ash tree to create his spear.
