I visited this park at a time of the year that didn’t seem ideal. I’m sure it would be nicer during the Dueling Festival, but during my visit it wasn’t particularly enjoyable.nnThe park was well maintained, but there wasn’t much that stood out. Most of the water fountains were not working, except for the bottom one. The nearby waterway running through the area was also emitting a bad smell.
A Series of Observations — That PersistednnI enjoyed Bendigo in the way one enjoys a place that is quietly getting on with itself while you stand nearby taking notes you will not share.nnAt one point, I became aware of a ragger — a term I understand to mean a person of persistence — shifting through what was once a miner’s lavatory bucket in search of something not immediately apparent. This struck me as optimistic rather than unsanitary. The bucket had history. The ragger had hope. Neither appeared in a hurry.nnBendigo’s Cornish influence is present in a manner that resists novelty. This is not the polite, half-and-half arrangement of dinner followed by dessert pasty. This is deeper. More resolute. The sort of heritage that arrives with tools, accents, and an understanding that the ground may, at any moment, surprise you if approached correctly.nnThe creek, which I believe answers to the name Bendigo, carries with it a gentle sulphurous note. Not enough to alarm, but sufficient to announce itself. It smells like effort. Like something being worked through rather than around. I found this reassuring.nnElsewhere, I learned that tram fares were once eighteen cents, which seems implausible until you consider that this pricing structure produced Steve — a tram driver of such dash and glory that it would have been unreasonable for him to charge more. Steve drove with purpose. The tram complied.nnNothing in Bendigo felt decorative. Everything appeared to be in service of something else, whether that something was known or not.nnWhen I left, the place remained, which I took as a sign of confidence.
Visited during the GLOW Bendigo Light Show, so only seen it during the cover of darkness. However, the artists and exhibitors really utilise the gigantic parkland space along with the paved path to connect all the art pieces together. A true gem for Bendigo.
We walked through the park today just because we recognised the name on the map and wow! The trees in autumn are particularly beautiful! They look very old and there is even a great view of them at the top of the hill.nnIt’s close to the main part of town, museums, war memorial, walking paths, a cool waterfall fountain and lots of native birds.
What a beautiful place. A must visit during your Bendigo trip.nCalamari, serene, well-maintained and manicured.
