it was just raining, we didn't see anything and we had to turn back halfway. The tour didn't last as long as planned, but the price stayed the same. There was no compensation after kind request on it. I advise against it
Drops you off to the parking area as they say. Driver provided good insight for the walk. They even provided email updates regarding the weather. The one thing that should be noted if you're driving your own car is they don't pick you up from the parking lot on the other end but just outside it they give you a dropped pin for google maps. So that means you just have to walk an additional 6 mins after you finish the hike to get to your car. Unless you park in the parking lot and then walk up. Also don't use the toilets at the beginning of the track, theres a few on the hike.
We had the worst experience!! We had the shuttle from Ketetahi at 6 in the morning. This is where we parked our car and from there they would bring us to the crossing. Once we arrived, the ranger said the crossing was not recommended today due to bad weather. We asked the driver from Tongariro Expeditions about it and he told us not to worry about it because they would pick us up again. We decided to do 7km of the crossing and turn back around. The boarding pass we received from Tongariro Expedition said ‘if you turn back, ring us now!’, so that’s what we did. The person who answered said there were no more shuttles going but we could try and ring the boss. We called the boss, but he didn’t seem to care at all. He just left us on our own. We were literally in the middle of nowhere and had to figure out a way to get back to our car. It was terrible!!!
The pick up was on time . They were able to meet me very close to where I was staying. They did cancel the later pickup time I signed up for so I had to do the earlier one but it was fine. The weather was perfect and so it didn't matter other than I did have to wait an hour and a half after I finished for the pickup shuttle. They were right on time like that promised but then people were "fighting" to get on the first shuttle. I would use them again.
Be careful when you book. Had my tour cancelled a week out after planning a trip around it due to lack of numbers though payment was already taken and order was confirmed over a week before. Need to work on being more transparent and open. Be careful to not get caught out.
WARNING WARNING WARNING TAKES YOUR MONEY WITHOUT PROVIDING A SERVICE! We booked and paid a bus service return from Turangi Bridge Motel for $110.00. The agreed pick up location was on my receipt and was also supported through a phone conversation a day earlier. Long story short they failed to pick us up. Then wasted my time over emails with Mandy trying to justify themselves. She even sent me pictures of the bus apparently waiting at a different location 600m up the road and leaving two minutes before the agreed time! Even with this obvious evidence of their failure they seem to believe they are right. So don’t use this service, there are plenty of other more reliable and professional options for you to choose. By the way, they chose not to provide a refund for the service that they didn’t actually provide. Not surprising, unfortunately. This business is incredibly unprofessional and have all the excuses under the sun. Simply don’t waste your time or money with them. Support businesses that are committed to good service and that demonstrate some business ethics. Do keep your lawyer’s number on standby if you still decide to give them a go.
The 5:15am pick-up in Taupo was uneventful and easy. The bus arrived pretty much on schedule and as advertised. We got dropped off at the trailhead around 6:45am. My issues stem from the pick-up. I finished the crossing around 12:15pm. Ok great, I'll hang out until the first bus leaves. The staff showed up at the end point right at 2:00pm, and the first bus left shortly after. There was no priority check in, there was a crowd of people equivalent to 1.5 bus loads following the bus around the turnaround, jockeying for position and trying to get on the first bus to leave. The "priority check-in" the company claims to have implemented gave priority to those at the front of the crowd, not those that had been waiting longer. I was the first person to have to wait for the second bus, despite seeing people get on the first bus that had finished an hour after me. My bus didn't leave until almost 2:40pm. Yes, the company is correct in that the buses are scheduled to leave between 2:00pm and 4:00pm, but there is no priority system in place to get the first finishers on the first bus. If you think you'll finish significantly before 2pm, I'd recommend booking a different company. Dempsey and Tongariro Crossing Shuttles both had multiple buses leaving earlier.
Everything was smooth, from the booking process and pick-up. We used the Ketetahi Park n Ride service $35. A bit more expensive considering this is only a one way service, but it allows more flexibility during the hike, which is worth it because it makes the hike more enjoyable and I feel that this is a fair trade-off. They also sent a reminder the day before. The staff at the Ketetahi carpark was friendly and helpful. I almost parked at the wrong side, but they reminded me to move my car somewhere else to avoid getting fined. The check-in was very straightforward and they gave us an information sheet. The bus was in a reasonably good condition too.
I walked up to this shuttle at 6:23am for my 6:30 booking only to watch the bus driving away. The coordinator radio’d the bus for me, and I made it onto the shuttle. But, it was clear they did not know to expect me, despite my ticket booking, and I wonder if I had arrived 1 minute later still over 5 minutes early how it would have turned out. Further, they sold 42 tickets for a 36 seat bus, so 6 paying passengers had to stand for the 30 minute shuttle ride. Not the greatest.
Parking your car at the end of the hike and being shuttled to the entrance is much better than rushing for a shuttle at the end of the day, allowing you to spend as much time on the mountain as possible. They make it super easy to arrange this. You just book online with your names, and give your name to the driver when you arrive. They have multiple vehicles so even if you're in a large group there will be enough room for everyone.
