I recently had the pleasure of dealing with Tip Top Meats in Laverton North while sourcing the meat for a fairly ambitious Shakespearean feast I was catering for a local community event.nnI'd already looked at a few butchers in the area, but one of my fellow volunteers at the Thursday Seniors lunch, Jocelyn — who has plenty of local knowledge — suggested I give Tip Top a try.nnI'm very glad I listened to her.nnMy main point of contact was Shelly, who looked after me from the first conversation and really helped guide the whole meat-buying process. After more than forty years working as a chef, I generally have a fair idea of what I'm looking for, but I also greatly appreciate someone who knows their own product and is prepared to work with you rather than simply sell you the most expensive cut in the cabinet.nnWe needed to feed around thirty people, produce something worthy of the occasion, and still keep a fairly tight rein on the budget. Shelly helped me work through the options, and we eventually settled on yearling bolar for the beef and chicken breast for the white meat.nnThe bolar was a particularly good choice. Rather than spending a fortune on a premium roasting cut, we treated the more economical cut with a bit of respect and cooked it slowly, giving the connective tissue time to soften and the meat every chance to become tender. It came up beautifully.nnThe chicken breasts were brined before roasting, as they needed to remain moist through cooking, holding, transportation and service. Again, the quality was excellent and the end result was exactly what we needed.nnWhat impressed me just as much as the meat itself, though, was the business.nnTip Top is a terrific shop — clean, orderly, well presented and with a great range of meat and other food-related products. There's easy parking, the place has a genuinely good feel about it, and the service was friendly and knowledgeable without any fuss.nnFor me, that's what a good butcher should be. Quality product matters enormously, but so does being able to have a conversation about what you're cooking, how you're going to cook it, how many people you're feeding and what cut is going to give you the best result for the job.nnShelly was terrific in that regard.nnSo a big thank you to Shelly and the team at Tip Top Meats for their advice, service and excellent product. The meat was an important part of our feast and it performed beautifully.nnAnd after my first visit I was able to confirm something else:nnThe joint really is Tip Top by nature as well as name.nnHighly recommended — and I'll certainly be back.
Great place to get bulk amounts of meat. Great prices and great quality, meats, spaces, marinades, top quality frozen meats too, pet food, and a solid pantry section for a one stop shop for today's dinner. Staff is friendly and they have membership rewards.nn+clearance section gets cleaned out, but if you cook on the day and are on a budget this is where you want to be. 1kg chicken ribs was $6, lasted 2 hours but it definitely could have been for 3 to 5 days worth of food. Took an hour to cook and make a sauce.
I have been to Tip Top meats twice now and I am so happy with the quality and prices that I will not buy meat from anywhere else. Even the sausages are meaty not full of fillers and the scotch fillet steak ends were melt in the mouth. I am spreading the word amongst friends.
A hidden gem in the Laverton North industrial area ..... massive range of packaged meats, small goods and speciality items. Try the fresh pork eye fillet and butterflied leg of lamb! Very helpful and friendly staff, as well as reasonable prices. Definitely going there again!
