Story

The Melbourne Clinic is Australia's largest private mental health service providing 175 inpatient beds, stand alone day program centre and an outreach service. We have been recognised nationally and internationally for providing high quality, patient-centred care since opening in 1978.

We recognise the critical role we play as a provider of quality mental health care to all Victorians and the importance of providing our services to our patients. Our staff are also aware of the critical role that family and friends play in the lives of our patients and therefore we seek to offer support and advice.

Patients are able to access the support and expertise of psychiatrists, mental health nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and psychologists.

I’m not one to leave review for things but having read the reviews for here I came in with a lot of doubts and felt the need to give my opinions. Don’t be fooled by all the negative reviews. Mental Health is not a broken arm, it can’t be ‘fixed’ in a single stay. The Melbourne Clinic offered me a very safe and inclusive place to come back down to earth, get the treatment I needed and the tools I will need going forward. The staff, particularly the nursing team, are all excellent. They were all kind, caring and patient. Having constant access to a psychiatrist is a blessing and frankly not possible in the real world. This alone can be reason enough to come here. The courses they run all through out the day are optional so you really get out of it what you put in. It is ultimately these tools that will determine how successful most people will be with their mental health journey. Like most people when I arrived I wasn’t ready to start the classes and the staff were very helpful in helping me get into a space where I was not only ready to learn, but wanting to. I’m not saying it is not without its faults. Sometimes the classes are full, sometimes they are cancelled. Sometimes you have someone who is very disruptive on your ward. Sometimes the doctors run late. To me it wasn’t the end of the world, to some people it is.
Not a bad facility and not bad staff at all. However I would not recommend the detox facility to anyone with a heroin problem, or who has a using history in North Richmond, as the doctors are far too relaxed in giving people leave from the clinic. You will be offered unescorted leave for one or two hours a day from day 3 of detox, when symptoms and cravings are at their strongest. With Victoria St and the supervised injecting facility only 5 minutes walk away, they really shouldn't be surprised that heroin users who knocked around Richmond end up lapsing. They really need to make the detox more lockdown like the public facilities, or at least do three drug screens a week and make the patient agree to the terms. And provide more activities on the weekendsF like attending online smart recovery meetings or even physically going to AA/NA as a supervised group.
Stay away. Poor to the point of possibly illegal practice. Worse off then I was before. Also not a "voluntary hospital". Saw a schizophrenic women laughed at and mocked by staff. I was told from the start I could discharge myself at any time. I asked a nurse to discharge me as my psychiatrist had told me I was recovered and able to leave, was told I could only leave without my medication which the particular meds cold turkey result in seizures which I then confirmed she knows it would result in a seizure. she said it was because of the "long weekend" Allowing me to leave cold turkey without medication resulting in a seizure or stay locked in - this act is what's referred to as entrapment. I was weaned off a medication over 4 days, later when my mental health worsened I called a Cat Team who visited to tell me the wean was against medical practice and dangerous. A policeman bragging heavilly about how he loves locking "junkies" up and shutting down safe injecting rooms was allowed in this Clinic with patients in Rehab/Detox. There were also blood stains on my walls. They want your money. Try sue me see if I care
Dr. Bruce Singh, WORST psychiatrist ever, stay away, RUN. I saw Dr.Singh about three years ago, he was my first psychiatrist, diagnosed me with bipolar in first session, recently confirmed by several mental health worker, psychologist , GP and new psychiatrist that I DONT have bipolar. But Singh prescribed me medication after first session, kept putting me on different medications, even double doses for lexapro and sodium valproate when it didn’t work really well for me. WORST DOCTOR EVER. Extremely rude and disrespectful attitude and unprofessional work ethic. He should lose his license and stop damaging patients. He was very mean at certain scenarios, don’t even wanna bring it up again.
Do not go here if you have a severe mental illness. I was offered a place in one of the clinic's programs. Leading up to the admission date I hadn't received much information on what the program would entail, nor did I have a review with a clinician/psychiatrist beforehand to discuss my suitability for the program which is listed as a requirement before admission on the TMC website. Then the day before I was to start the program, I was told over the phone that I was too mentally unstable for the program and I should improve my mental health more before coming to TMC, and my place in the program would be cancelled. This was poor of TMC to cancel my admission the day before it was to start, especially since they had details of my mental illness history and severity on file for months prior. They also told me that if I was to become unsafe or experience an escalation in my illness during the program, that I would have to be discharged and leave the clinic immediately. TMC reiterated that they do not deal with severe patients that may be at risk to themselves and that nursing staff will be limited, so if I experienced distress associated with my mental illness, they will not be able to provide me help or assistance. There are also no visitors allowed in the clinic, so I would not have the support of family/friends during my stay. If you want a supportive, thorough and free help for your mental illness, I suggest going in the public system which is not driven by profits. In the public system I was provided with psychiatrists, psychologists, occupational therapists, experienced psychiatric nurses, social workers and peer support workers.
Not the best facility I've been to, bullying behaviour by patients to another patient not myself which was left unactioned. People shooting up and bringing in small bottles of alcohol to consume in the smokers area which is pretty shocking to me. I'd suggest to look for other facilities and leave this one as a last resort unfortunately.
I cannot speak as to the Melbourne Clinic as a whole entity, however Dr Ahmad Torshizi psychiatrist is one of the best in the business. He takes the time to fully understand you & your unique needs and is very compassionate & informed. I cannot recommend him highly enough!
Horrible horrible place run by a narcissist Dr Perry Short should not be practicing. He is dangerous. Read his personal reviews and see hundreds of reviews all stating the same thing about this awful doctor. Void of empathy and dangerously narcissistic.
Rescheduled an appointment, confirmed the new appt twice via email, once via phone, and still no one was there when I arrived for the appointment. No apology provided when I contacted them. Instead, they gaslight me, saying I had the wrong day. However, I have screenshots of their confirmation. Not very reliable or organised receptionists.
24 years ago I was admitted to the Melbourne Clinic , suffering from Accute Anxiety with Depression. I was treated extremely well by both Doctors and Staff. I also had Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. I was completely cured. Many, many thanks. ..
