The Grain Store

About

100% Australian independent beer venue located in the historic East End of Newcastle NSW, Offering an All Day menu inspired by the American Diner/Grill.

Story

The Grain Store Newcastle, owned and operated by Kristy and Corey Crooks, has been restored to the beautiful Warehouse venue it once was. Located in Newcastle’s new food and cafe hub of the historic East End, with high ceilings, Art Deco tiling and timber flooring, it is the perfect site for the independent beer focus it now has. It oozes character and style, and it’s walls tell a story.

Situated on the corner of Scott & Telford St, it was built by J.T Toohey (Tooheys Brewery) in 1885. It was originally built as the grain and keg storage facility & acted as the Newcastle Depot. The original elevator shaft down to the underground basement is still there to this day and can be seen by customers.

The Grain Store boasts a tap list totaling 21, featuring 100% independently owned and 100% Australian brewed beers & ciders. This makes it one of the largest independent tap lists in Australia. This allows us to always have the beer style of your liking available on tap at any given time. So whether it’s a crisp Pale Ale, hoppy IPA, smoked Porter or dry Stout, and everything else in between, it will be there for you to pair with our fresh, tasty food offering.

We don’t expect you to know everything about beer. That’s what our trained staff are for. We are very passionate about product knowledge and service when it comes to beer and ensure that all our staff are dedicated to the cause! So come on down and allow us to share our knowledge and open your eyes to the world of good independent beer and the amazing beer taste experiences and food pairing opportunities it can give you!

Parking was not easy, but it is a very short walk 100 mtrs from end of the line of the light rail at the top end of town. As it was my first time here, it would have been nice to have known that I needed to get the menu ourselves from the bar, and would have also been nice to know that we had to order from the bar. Once that was sorted, the meal was very nice. Noise carries, and was loud for a non busy night. There is a lot of history within this building.
This place is the ultimate craft bar. Huge selection of continually changing selection. Good is absolutely amazing, the buffalo wings are to die for. The atmosphere was great, service was quick and very friendly. Highly recommended.
Great bar & dining in Newie's east end. Lovely moody decor, nicely-dimly-lit, with interesting furniture & art work etc. Excellent range of beers incl. local & nearby region distilleries. Nice dining options too. Well-worth visiting & revisiting.
Loved it! Food was all very tasty - from the wings to the pumpkin salad, the burger to the califlower bites - it was all great. The whole family also enjoyed that there are games ready for patrons to pick up and play. And that doesn't even begin to describe the great the beer menu.
Great vibe on a Saturday night. Music volume just right for a decent conversation. Grain supreme pizza and trio wings a must have. Can’t go wrong with the wide range of craft beer. Loved trying this place
Having a good system in place to support an on-tap selection of 21 craft brews is a must. Grain Store in Newcastle East has this nailed. You make your selection from numbered printed lists with tasting notes, and transcribe the numbers onto a beer paddle $17 picture. The bar person takes this diagram and replicated it in beer—five 110ml pours—passing it back with your diagram forming the key to what you’re drinking. My two favourite brews came from One Drop in Botany, a Red Plum Sour $8/325ml that was like biting into a sharp red plum, and The Fiddler $9/325ml that has a big green burst of grassy hops before a grapefruit finish. I also enjoyed Ocean Reach Tropical XPA $8.50/325ml for the summery fruity post-beach vibes. In the eats, they neatly avoid the potato chip crisis by making skin-on beauties from real spuds. Load ‘em up with gravy, bacon and liquid cheese for five bucks: it’s worth it. It does make a burger and fries kind of pricy, but the Loui $22 with crisp dry chicken breast, lettuce and creamy blue cheese sauce cut with spicy buffalo, did deliver a solid burger experience. A good charry wagyu beef patty is the basis of the WhoopAss beef burger $23 loaded up with American cheddar, onion rings, jalapeños and both buffalo and smoky barbecue sauce. It’s a messy two fist experience that stops just shy of going too far.
Oktoberfest was fantastic! Still craving for the bratwursts available that day. Great choices of beers as well. Can’t wait to go back.
Definitely my go to place for pub food when I’m down this end of Newy. Decent items on the menu combined with a huge list of craft beers to try. I had a pulled pork wrap with loaded fries last time. Hit the spot on the night.
Huge selection of beers on tap. Reasonable prices and good service. Heaps of tables and old style booths with games you can play while eating/drinking. Food was also very good. I would recommend and definitely go back again.
The Grain Store was amazing. Plenty of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options to choose from. The food was delicious and the customer service was superb
